President Donald Trump sparked an immediate backlash on Twitter early Wednesday after he thanked Saudi Arabia for helping lower global oil prices. Hundreds of tweeters expressed incredulity at Trump’s post, which came a day after his bizarre statement that the U.S. would remain a “steadfast partner” of Saudi Arabia ― even if Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the brutal slaying of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Enjoy! $54, was just $82,” Trump tweeted.
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., and Mike Espy, a former congressman and former U.S. agriculture secretary. Mississippi Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith apologized Tuesday evening for a recent remark that evoked the South’s ugly past of racial terror against African-Americans and has turned what should be an easy win for the GOP in a runoff election for the U.S. Senate into an unexpectedly competitive race. There was no ill will, no intent whatsoever in my statement,” Hyde-Smith said in a debate with Democrat Mike Espy.

Save the Children based its figures on mortality rates for untreated cases of severe acute malnutrition, or SAM, in young children. The United Nations says more than 1.3 million children have suffered from SAM since a Saudi-led coalition went to war with Yemen's Houthi rebels in March 2015.
Rights activists on Tuesday urged Booking.com to follow the example of Airbnb and withdraw listings for rentals in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, even as Israel called the move "disgusting" and threatened legal action. Airbnb said Monday it will remove such listings, just ahead of the release of a Human Rights Watch report criticising the inclusion of settlements. Israel strongly denounced Airbnb's decision and threatened legal action against the company, while Palestinian officials welcomed it.

George T. Conway III, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, has emerged as one of President Trump’s most persistent, biting critics, describing the administration his wife works in as a “s***house in a dumpster fire” in an interview with the Yahoo News Skullduggery podcast. Conway is a prominent Republican lawyer who supported Trump during the campaign. In the same podcast interview, Conway spoke for the first time about his own role in helping to drive the events that led to Clinton’s impeachment — a cause he took up, he said, over his outrage about the president’s efforts to avoid accountability for allegations of sexual harassment dating back to when he was governor of Arkansas.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in Atlanta on behalf of the teen, who is identified only as "Jane Doe." It accuses Gwinnett County Public Schools officials of violating her rights under Title IX, a 1972 law that bars discrimination based on sex in schools that receive federal money. Adele Kimmel, a lawyer with legal advocacy group Public Justice, which is representing Doe, said a complaint filed in August 2015 with the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has been investigated but remains unresolved.
Saudi King Salman stood by the crown prince and heaped praise on the judiciary Monday, in his first public remarks since critic Jamal Khashoggi's murder tipped the country into one of its worst crises. The public prosecutor last week exonerated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the king's son, of involvement in the murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, but the CIA reportedly concluded he had ordered the assassination. "The kingdom was founded on Islamic principles of justice and equality, and we are proud of the efforts of the judiciary and the public prosecution," the 82-year-old monarch said in his annual address to the Shura Council, a top advisory body.

Pyongyang blew up 10 guard posts in the Demilitarized Zone Tuesday as the two Koreas pursue a reconciliation drive, even while denuclearisation talks stall between the US and the North. The move is one of the steps agreed during the Pyongyang summit between the South's President Moon Jae-in and the North's leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang in September. The North told the South that it would blow up the 10 facilities almost simultaneously, Seoul's defence ministry said, adding that Southern soldiers "observed and confirmed the guard posts were completely ruined at the announced time".
