      What's next for Derek Chauvin?

After being led away in handcuffs from the courtroom following his conviction in the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was transported Tuesday to the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights in Stillwater, about 25 miles east of downtown Minneapolis. Chauvin is being held apart from the general prison population for his own safety in what facility officials call "administrative segregation" — alone in a single cell. Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday on all three counts: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Turkey summons Swedish envoy to protest Sweden's 'support for terrorists'

Turkey's Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden's ambassador in Ankara to a meeting to protest contacts between two Swedish ministers and members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara considers a terrorist group, Turkish diplomatic sources said on Tuesday. Turkey considers the SDF to be an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militia, which has waged a decades-old insurgency against the Turkish state. Ankara says the Syrian Kurdish YPG, which forms the military backbone of the SDF, is an offshoot of the PKK.

Man pumping gas at convenience store killed, shooter dead

A man opened fire at a convenience store in Pennsylvania early Wednesday, apparently at random, killing a truck driver who was pumping gas and wounding another man before taking his own life, officials said. The man had first shot at a car on a highway several miles away before heading to the convenience store around 4:45 a.m., according to Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin. The woman in the car told authorities she didn't realize her car had been hit with a bullet until she stopped at a Wawa store in Upper Macungie Township, outside Allentown.

Nineteenth U.S. death tied to Takata air bag reported in South Carolina

Honda Motor Co said on Wednesday it had confirmed the 19th U.S. death tied to a ruptured Takata air bag inflator since 2009 -- and the 16th in one of its vehicles. The Japanese automaker said that following a joint inspection, the company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that a defective Takata driver's air bag inflator ruptured in the crash of a 2002 Honda Accord on Jan. 9, 2021, in Lancaster County, South Carolina. The defect, which leads in rare instances to air bag inflators rupturing and sending dangerous metal fragments flying, prompted the largest automotive recall in history.

Grizzly victim knew risks of living with bears, friends say

Grizzly bears are part of life in the gateway communities bordering Yellowstone National Park, and backcountry snowmobile guide Charles “Carl” Mock knew well the risks that come with working, hiking and fishing among the fear-inspiring carnivores, his friends said. Bear spray residue found on Mock's clothing suggested he tried to ward off last week's attack using a canister of the Mace-like deterrent, considered an essential item in the backcountry. While some outsiders questioned the inherent perils of such a lifestyle in the wake of Mock's death, those who knew him said he accepted the risk as trade-off for time spent in a wilderness teeming with elk, deer, wolves and other wildlife.

Dems' ambitions narrow as political reality sets in

Sen. Angus King is still undecided on whether to support D.C. statehood, an important goal for many of the Democrats he aligns with. King is one of five Democratic caucus members who have yet to support the statehood bill, souring what should be a milestone week for the movement to empower the capital city. The House will approve statehood for the second time on Thursday, and now Democrats have a supportive president in Joe Biden.

Osaka seeks virus emergency after ongoing alert steps fail

Japan's western metropolis of Osaka has decided to ask the government to declare a state of emergency in the region after ongoing alert measures failed to control the spread of a more contagious coronavirus variant. Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura's decision to request a third state of emergency comes two weeks after a month of alert measures began in the prefecture and just 50 days after an earlier toothless state of emergency ended. The ongoing alert, which started on April 5 in Osaka and has since been expanded to 10 areas including Tokyo, allows prefectural leaders to issue binding orders for bars and restaurants to operate shorter hours in exchange for compensation, with penalties for violators.

Derek Chauvin wrote his lawyer's phone number on his hand before being convicted of murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd, as a preparation for going to jail, his attorney told TMZ. Images of Chauvin being walked out of the courtroom in handcuffs show writing on his left hand in black ink. Chauvin's lawyer, Eric Nelson, told TMZ that his client knew that if he was convicted, he would likely have his bail revoked, so he was seemingly preparing for the worst.

Upbeat assessments buoy hopes for revival of Iran nuclear deal

Vienna talks meant to revive and restore the 2015 Iran nuclear deal appear to be going well, according to assessments by both American and Iranian officials as the latest round of negotiations drew to a close. Iran's president Hassan Rouhani said in a speech Wednesday that the Americans “appear to be serious” about lifting sanctions imposed by the former administration of Donald Trump. And though Iran's chief negotiator Abbas Araqchi warned that Iran would abandon talks if United States demands became excessive, the reformist daily newspaperEbtekar said the “anti-Iran coalition was on its last breath” and that reviving the deal was "in the home stretch”.
