The controversial director of elections in Broward County said Tuesday that her division will finish a machine recount by the state deadline of Thursday afternoon, adding that she might retire after this election. “We will complete the recount … I think we’re on a good schedule and we will finish before the deadline on Thursday,” Brenda Snipes told reporters in the media room, which is separated by a pane of glass from the room where elections workers are retabulating the results of the Florida election that took place a week ago. If any of those races is within a margin of 0.25 percent after the machine recount, then the state will move to a hand recount of the ballots.
The death toll in Northern California’s Camp fire climbed higher on Tuesday as emergency responders found more bodies five days into the ongoing blaze. The fire that ravaged the rural town of Paradise, California, has killed 48 people, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters late Tuesday. It has burned more than 8,800 structures, Cal Fire officials said.
A 10-year-old Arizona girl says she was able to ward off a potential kidnapper by asking him for her family's secret "code word" on Wednesday. Brenda James told KSAZ that her daughter, whose name has not been released, was walking with a friend near a park in San Tan Valley, Ariz., at 3:45 p.m. when a man in a white SUV approached the two children. The quick-thinking 10-year-old knew something wasn't right and asked the man for her family's predetermined "code word" before she would get in the vehicle.
Saudi King Salman will resume an unprecedented domestic tour next week, the royal court said Tuesday, as the kingdom grapples with an international crisis over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The king is now set to visit the "northern regions of the kingdom" next week to "inspect the condition of citizens and inaugurate a number of development projects", the official Saudi Press Agency said citing the royal court. SPA said the king is also set to address the Shura Council, a top advisory body, on Monday, in his first public comments since the murder of insider-turned-critic Khashoggi on October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

An Indonesian woman whose fiance died on a Lion Air flight that plunged into the sea was photographed in her wedding dress and professed her love for him on the day they were to have been married. Intan Syari's fiance, Dr. Rio Nanda Pratama, was among 189 people who were killed when the Boeing 737 crashed Oct. 29 shortly after taking off from Jakarta. Search teams were set to sift through the charred wreckage of Paradise, Calif., on Tuesday in search of human remains as authorities investigated the cause of state’s deadliest wildfire. The Camp Fire blaze, still raging in northern California, has killed at least 42 people, and 228 others are missing. Two other people died in the separate Woolsey Fire, which has destroyed 435 structures and displaced about 200,000 people in the mountains and foothills near Southern California’s Malibu coast, west of Los Angeles.
A retired white firefighter who fired a shotgun at a black teenager after the boy knocked on his front door for directions has been sentenced to four to 10 years behind bars. A Michigan judge handed down Jeffrey Zeigler’s sentence in an Oakland County courtroom on Tuesday for assault with intent to do great bodily harm and committing a felony with a firearm for the April 12 incident. Brennan Walker, 14, was walking to school after missing his school bus when he said he became lost and knocked on Zeigler’s front door in the Rochester Hills neighborhood.
