Former Justice Dept. lawyer cuts Jan. 6 deposition short

A former assistant attorney general who aligned himself with former President Donald Trump after he lost the 2020 election has declined to be fully interviewed by a House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, ending a deposition after around 90 minutes Friday. Jeffrey Clark, who championed Trump's efforts to overturn the election, presented the committee with a letter saying he would not answer questions based on Trump's assertions of executive privilege, including in an ongoing court case, according to a person familiar with the closed-door meeting who was granted anonymity to discuss it. Clark left the interview with his lawyer, who told reporters that they were heading "home.”

Andrew Cuomo court date delayed after prosecutor says sexual-harassment charge is ‘potentially defective’

Soares, who has said he was caught off guard by the filing, said in a letter to Judge Holly Trexler on Thursday that his office had been investigating the matter for several months. See also: As Andrew Cuomo exits, a step-by-step guide to getting help if you're sexually harassed at work “We were in the middle of that investigation when the Sheriff unilaterally and inexplicably filed a compliant in this court,” Soares wrote in the letter. Unfortunately, the filings in this matter are potentially defective in that the police-officer-complainant failed to include a sworn statement by the victim such that the People could proceed with a prosecution on these papers.

Ruggs’ Corvette Seen Flying Down Street Moments Before Fiery Fatal Crash

Moments before Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III's fiery fatal crash early Tuesday morning, a security guard noticed a Corvette flying by at incredible speed. Just 10 seconds later, Alex Hart, who was patrolling an apartment complex on Las Vegas' South Rainbow Boulevard, “heard a vehicle trying to stop as tires were screeching, followed by a loud collision,” the complex's owner said in a statement to 8 News Now on Friday. Hart ran down the street to find Ruggs lying on the road beside his smashed up Corvette, and a Toyota RAV4 with Tina Tintor, 23, and her 3-year-old golden retriever, Max, trapped inside.

In Richmond, Youngkin to face 'the Senate Democratic Alamo'

Republican Glenn Youngkin spent months talking to voters about his plans to roll back Democrats' “left, liberal, progressive agenda." When he takes office in January as Virginia's next governor, he'll need to talk to Senate Democrats about that. Youngkin's victory was part of a Republican sweep on election night that saw the GOP retake Virginia's two other statewide offices and likely flip control of the state House.

Witnesses: Threat, lunge for gun from 1st Rittenhouse victim

The first man shot by Kyle Rittenhouse on the streets of Kenosha was “hyperaggressive” that night, threatened to kill Rittenhouse and someone with him, and later lunged for Rittenhouse's rifle just before the 17-year-old fired, witnesses testified Thursday. The testimony at Rittenhouse's murder trial came from two witnesses who had been called to the stand by the prosecution but gave accounts far more favorable to the defense in the politically charged case. Rittenhouse, now 18, is charged with shooting three men, two of them fatally, in the summer of 2020.

Supporters of Taiwan independence will be liable for life, says China

China will make people who support "Taiwan independence" criminally liable for life, a spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office said on Friday, drawing anger from the island amid heightened tension across the sensitive Taiwan Strait. This was the first time that China has spelt out concretely punishment for people deemed to be pro-Taiwan independence, as tensions rise between China and the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own. China has not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control, despite the democratic island's claim that it's an independent country and that it will defend its freedom and democracy.

Anti-Vaxxer’s Racist Outburst at Council Meeting Turns Into Epic Self-Own

A discussion about coronavirus vaccines became so heated during a San Diego board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday night that one public attendee unleashed a vile, racist attack before being booted by security and ditched by a radio station he worked for. San Diego County lawmakers used the meeting to provide routine updates about new cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations, transmission rates, and how vaccination rates can stall coronavirus from spreading in the county. San Diego doesn't have an indoor vaccine mandate but many attendees used the meeting to cast doubt on the efficacy of the vaccine and question why there were even COVID-19 restrictions.

EXPLAINER: What came of hero testimony at Rittenhouse trial?

An effort by prosecutors at Kyle Rittenhouse's murder trial to portray one of the men he shot as a hero never got off the ground Friday — and one legal expert said they were probably fortunate it didn't. Rittenhouse, 18, is on trial on several counts including homicide in the August 2020 shootings during street unrest in Kenosha. Among the dead was Anthony Huber, a 26-year-old protester who was seen on bystander video hitting Rittenhouse with a skateboard before he was fatally shot.

From ‘wellness’ to shotguns: how Leonardo DiCaprio’s Belize eco-dream turned sour

When the actor-turned-eco-warrior arrived in Glasgow on Tuesday, he chose not to join world leaders centre-stage, but headed to the gritty suburb of Maryhill, meeting activists at a fringe event. In 2015, the actor announced plans to build a “ground-breaking” eco-tourism resort at Blackadore Caye, a two-mile-long island in the Caribbean off Belize. Composed of luxury villas priced at up to $15m (£11m), the resort would be the “greenest luxury development” ever, according to its New Agey eco-blurb - parts of which sound like they might be aimed at Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow or the Duchess of Sussex.

Noem contradicts labor secretary on meeting with daughter

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem contradicted her own labor secretary Thursday about a meeting last year in her office, saying it didn't include any discussion about how her daughter could still win a real estate appraiser license after a state agency moved to deny it. The Republican governor answered questions from South Dakota reporters on the episode for the first time Thursday, more than a month after The Associated Press first reported on it. Noem's secretary of labor defended her department's actions to lawmakers last week by explaining that state regulators before the meeting had already reached an agreement to provide Noem's daughter, Kassidy Peters, with an opportunity to fix issues with her application.

Zimov, who has studied permafrost from his scientific base in the diamond-producing Yakutia region for decades, is seeing the effects of climate change in real time.
