Brett Kavanaugh’s hellish Supreme Court fraternity pledge week offered many lessons, but the most powerful, if least noted, was about the raising of boys in America ― all boys, not just the groomed Georgetown elite from which the judge emerged. Too many boys are raised in packs, whether they’re called fraternities, sports teams, or gangs, all of which offer brotherhood in return for loyalty, obedience, and a dedicated contempt for the Other ― anyone, that is, who isn’t a member, above all women.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said he wants Saudi Arabia to allow 18 suspects that it detained for the Saudi’s killing to be tried in Turkish courts, setting up further complications with the Saudi government, which has said it is conducting its own investigation and will punish those involved. Saudi Arabia has described the suspects as rogue operators, even though officials linked to Saudi Arabia’s assertive Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have been implicated in the killing.

Some knew it as the “sad side” of Ellis Island. A century ago, the hospital complex at the historic Ellis Island immigration inspection station was the place where approximately one out of every 10 arrivals who were too sick to be allowed into the country were sent to recover, or to die. The 29-building medical complex — in its day the largest public health institution in the United States — was itself left to die when the immigration station closed in 1954.
