More than 100,000 U.S. tourists arrive to Los Cabos at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula each month, drawn my its beaches and dramatic desert landscape. For the first time this year, millions of Americans may qualify for a particularly generous tax break — the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) — thanks to an expansion of its eligibility requirements. "There are important changes to EITC that will help this credit reach more hard-working families this year," IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. Historically without the expansion, 1 in 5 eligible Americans don't claim the EITC, prompting the Internal Revenue Service to hold an EITC Awareness Day each year — this year on January 28 — to make sure taxpayers don't miss out.

The animals were not in kennels and rushed at Durand, violently attacking her, the lawsuit said.
The notion of a scam seemed to make even more sense than thinking that the IRS could be sending letters to people who already paid their taxes and filed their returns. Why would the IRS need another return? If the federal government cashed their checks, she and others wondered, doesn't that mean the IRS received their return in the mail — since the return and check were mailed together?

Family members of women in a sober living group home who were killed and injured in a fiery van crash last year are suing a car company and the group home, saying the 2002 Dodge Ram was prone to tipping over and was not properly maintained. Just before the April crash, a vehicle ahead of the passenger van unexpectedly changed lanes on a Georgia interstate, police said at the time. The van then went out of control, rolled onto its side and slid across two lanes, bursting into flames and killing six women inside, police said in an accident report.

Bill Maher saved his best for last on his Friday night Real Time on HBO. Maher noted a recent statement by a Fox News commentator, who suggested he's gearing up to run for president, which critics saw as a sign that he's changed.
One of three Philippine election commissioners handling petitions to disqualify late dictator Ferdinand Marcos' son from the May presidential polls said Thursday that she voted in favor of the petitions and suspected there were efforts to nullify her vote against the leading candidate criticized by human rights groups. Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said she voted to uphold the petitions, which sought Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.'s disqualification from the race because of a previous tax conviction. An offense of “moral turpitude” is one of the grounds to bar a candidate from seeking and holding public office.
“Daddy was hitting mommy with a blue stick,” the 11-year-old daughter of a woman allegedly beaten to death in Long Beach said in a forensic interview with authorities. The stick was actually a blue concrete pipe, and the events that the couple's eldest daughter shared with forensic interviewers, along with other evidence, backed up what Long Beach police suspected all along: Robert Oshinski, 37, had allegedly killed his common-law wife, Ashley A. “Angie” Barbara. After hearing the evidence, it didn't take long for Justice Court Judge Dianne Ladner to find there was enough evidence to bound the case over to a Harrison County grand jury for indictments.
