In 2018 Yehiya Sinwar, the Hamas veteran who effectively rules Gaza, made an unusual announcement. Speaking two days after Israeli soldiers killed 60 Palestinian protesters and militants at the Gaza border fence, he said that his group would pursue “peaceful, popular resistance”. The largest nurses union in the U.S. called on the CDC Saturday to reverse guidance issued this week that allows for people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to go maskless while participating in indoor and outdoor activities. Details: National Nurses United executive director Bonnie Castillo said in a statement the new guidance is "not based on science, does not protect public health, and threatens the lives of patients, nurses, and other frontline workers across the country." "Now is not the time to relax protective measures, and we are outraged that the CDC has done just that while we are still in the midst of the deadliest pandemic in a century."
Zimbabwe's High Court on Saturday forced the country's chief justice to retire, ruling that an extension of his term by the president is illegal. The ruling is a major setback for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose party in May pushed through constitutional amendments that critics said concentrated power in the hands of the president. Amid a furor, Mnangagwa used his new powers to extend Chief Justice Luke Malaba's tenure by 5 years on May 11, three days before the justice's scheduled retirement.
Reports in the international media that Israel had entered Gaza to battle militants are being viewed by some as the result of a ploy to lure the fighters into defensive positions that made them targets for Israeli airpower. On Thursday, news that Israel Defense Forces troops were massing at Israel's border with Gaza was widely reported. Then, early Friday in Israel, an IDF statement prompted news outlets to widely report that an invasion had begun.
Khahliso Amahle Myataza's family is from the South African township of Soweto in Johannesburg where they spoke Sotho, Xhosa and Zulu. There were other black children in a similar predicament but they didn't make friends with each other - not wanting to be associated with others who did not speak English. The 17-year-old's fluency has come with the realisation of how, not only being able to speak English, but to speak it in a certain way - can open and close doors in South Africa.
In the ancient port city of Jaffa, where Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel live side by side, the ritual has taken on an ugly familiarity. Israel is in the grip of its worst communal violence in decades — an eruption of ethnic strife that has rattled cities and towns from the Negev desert to the biblical hills of the Galilee. To a watching world, this bout of conflict within Israel's borders has been largely overshadowed by fierce fighting that broke out Monday between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, the most intense such confrontation in seven years.

If ever there was a time to want to be driving an electric car, it may have been last week — after the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack forced the company to take some of its systems offline. Fuel shortages resulting from the attack caused panic in parts of the country, with residents lining up at the pump, causing gas prices to spike. Long lines, high gas prices and short tempers are frustrations that electric vehicle owners like Kathleen Biggins are glad they don't have to deal with.
Across Britain, there are 9.7% fewer restaurants to choose from, compared with before the pandemic. The data in the latest Market Recovery Monitor from CGA and AlixPartners suggests that while many pubs and bars have also struggled to survive the pandemic, it is restaurants that have fared worst. A suspected white supremacist is facing charges after allegedly ditching a bullet-riddled car containing three dead men in the parking lot of an Albuquerque hospital this week. Richard Kuykendall, a 41-year-old with an “apparent association” with the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, was charged Friday with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition for his role in the Wednesday triple homicide, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for New Mexico. Prosecutors allege that after a deadly shootout in a nearby alley, Kuykendall drove to Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital with the victims, removed his shirt and told a security officer “that there were three dead guys in the Chevy” before he walked away.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted to flip the script about her behavior towards political rivals on Friday when questioned about a recent video of her taunting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Speaking to Greg Kelly on right-wing network Newsmax, Greene described several encounters with Democrats that she said make her the victim of aggression, contrary to what she sees as a skewed media narrative. "They're accusing me of being aggressive and saying that my mannerisms are wrong," she said.
Journalists for the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other international news outlets were forced to run for their lives on Saturday after the Israeli military bombed their high-rise office building in Gaza City. The missile strike, one of several attempts by Israeli forces to kneecap journalists in the region, left the Associated Press “shocked and horrified” and Al Jazeera said it constituted a war crime. About an hour before the strike, a resident of the 12-story building received a call, purportedly from the Israeli military, warning of an impending attack but giving no explanation for why the building was being targeted.
When a Georgia airport expanded a runway during World War II, it paved over a family burial site. Two graves remain at the edge of runway 10 and 28, while two more are off to the side. While runway 10 at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Georgia may not be a particularly difficult or scary landing, it does involve touching down near a pair of graves.

Not only can vaccinated people mostly avoid masks, they can limit testing for COVID-19. People who are fully vaccinated and don't have symptoms also should not be randomly screened, the CDC said. The CDC's loosening of masking restrictions and updated testing guidance comes as large private employers and universities still routinely test vaccinated employees and students.
The talk all week surrounded Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, his failed drug test and trainer Bob Baffert's place in history. On Saturday, the majority of the Preakness Stakes looked a lot like the Run for the Roses two weeks prior. Medina Spirit broke cleanly from the starting gate, raced right to the front under jockey John Velazquez and was in prime position to win the second leg of Thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown at the top of the stretch.

“It’s no defense of Mr. Trump’s conduct to say that the digital public square shouldn’t suppress speech by political leaders.”
“The former president no longer gets the ‘head of state’ exception to terms of service.”
