Russia is mounting “very active efforts” to interfere with the U.S. election to benefit President Trump, FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress on Thursday. Unlike their activities during the 2016 presidential election, the Russians do not seem to be using their cyber capabilities to target the U.S. election infrastructure, according to Wray. Instead, the Kremlin's approach is one of “malign foreign influence,” with Russia utilizing “social media, use of proxies, state media, online journals, etc.,” he told a hearing of the House Homeland Security Committee.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is hoping that barbershop conversations will equate to an increase in voter turnout for the Democratic presidential nominee among Black men in November. Modeled similarly to LeBron James' hit HBO show “The Shop,” which presents “unfiltered conversation and debate from the biggest names in sports and entertainment,” Biden's campaign launched his own version, called “Shop Talk,” last month. The weekly forum is a virtual roundtable discussion with prominent Black men on the challenges they face across the country.
In a congressional hearing Wednesday, Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, held up the disposable surgical mask he had been wearing and declared that the simple covering may ultimately be better than a much-hoped-for vaccine. “This face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine,” Redfield said, referring to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Redfield went on to say that a vaccine could have an immunogenicity of 70 percent, meaning that it may not work in close to one-third of people to whom it is administered.
Colleagues of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said Thursday that a water bottle with a trace of the Novichok nerve agent was found in his hotel room in the Siberian city of Tomsk after he fell ill on a flight from there to Moscow last month. Navalny later was flown to Germany, where he was kept in an induced coma for more than two weeks as he was treated with an antidote at Berlin's Charite hospital. Members of his team accused the Kremlin of involvement in the poisoning, charges that Russian officials have vehemently denied.
Attorney General William Barr, in politically white hot comments, called Democrats' concerns Donald Trump would refuse to leave office if he loses the election in November “crap.” Mr Barr lambasted the opposition party, which he dubbed a “mob,” echoing the president's rhetoric, over everything from Covid-era mail-in ballots to allegations they are purposefully trying to sow seeds of doubt about the election's validity – just hours before Mr Trump returned to Twitter and appeared to do just that. Since many states decided to alleviate voters' polling station-related health concerns amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Mr Trump and his surrogates, including his attorney general, have said mailed-in ballots would automatically bring fraud.
Hazardous smoke from wildfires across the West is presenting the latest danger for the men and women who pick America's fruit and vegetable crops in a year when record heat and the coronavirus pandemic have already put their lives at risk. On Thursday, while air quality improved in the San Francisco Bay Area, throughout much of California's Central Valley it remained classified as “unhealthy” or worse. Under those conditions, residents are advised to stay indoors — but farmworkers don't have that option.
A doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison issued a public apology this week after accusations emerged online that they were presenting as Black person despite being mostly of Italian ancestry. CV Vitolo-Haddad — who uses they/them pronouns — wrote in a Medium post Sunday that they resigned from a teaching position and stepped down as co-president of UW-Madison's chapter of the Teaching Assistants' Association graduate workers' union. The situation came to light in a Medium post by an anonymous "affiliate of the university" who accused Vitolo-Haddad of "race-shifting and copious lying."
Students and parents were upset when the suspected Kenosha shooter was on a list of "modern heroes" that they could choose to defend as part of a Dallas high school's class assignment, CNN reported. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and a string of other felonies tied to the killing of two people at a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Joseph Rosenbaum, who was shot and killed in Kenosha, was also on that list.
Support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement among US residents has seen a decrease over the last three months, according to a new poll. In a new survey from the Pew Research Centre, 55 per cent of US adults said they either strongly or somewhat supported BLM, compared to 67 per cent who answered the same in June, just weeks after protests against police brutality and racial violence were reignited. The movement was launched in 2013, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in Trayvon Martin's fatal shooting, but reached national attention again in May 2020, following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd while in police custody.
A 68-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman who were found dead near their home in fire-ravaged Northern California had been packed to evacuate but decided to stay based on "erroneous information" about the blaze, authorities said. A volunteer firefighter in Oregon who used a bullhorn to alert neighbors to approaching flames later found his own home destroyed. In Oregon, 1 million acres have burned and 1,145 homes and 579 other structures have been destroyed, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.
Olivia Troye, Vice President Mike Pence's former top coronavirus task force adviser, slammed President Donald Trump's pandemic response in an interview and in a video published Thursday. Troye said Trump actively undermined the task force's efforts to protect Americans and that he cared primarily about the economy and his reelection, rather than the pandemic response. Troye described one COVID-19 task force meeting in which she said the president remarked that the pandemic might be a "good thing" because it prevented him from having to shake hands with "disgusting people."
Investigative journalist Bob Woodward joins Yahoo News Editor in Chief Daniel Klaidman and Chief Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff to discuss his new book, “Rage. In the weeks leading up to publication, Woodward has come under fire for not releasing audio recordings of President Trump privately acknowledging the potential severity of the coronavirus pandemic as early as February. He explains, however, that due to the nonlinear nature of reporting, it would not have been feasible to release the audio recordings early because of a lack of context.
Given the gigantic stakes, Joe Biden is running a fairly low-key campaign for the presidency. In other words, Biden is largely following the strategy of his primary election, in which he coasted to victory on the strength of his reputation and the anxious fears of the electorate. The FiveThirtyEight polling average had Biden up by eight points at the end of July, and today he is up by seven.

Attorney General William Barr is taking aim at his own Justice Department, criticizing prosecutors for behaving as “headhunters" in their pursuit of prominent targets and for using the weight of the criminal justice system to launch what he said were “ill-conceived” political probes. The comments Wednesday night an event hosted by Michigan's Hillsdale College amounted to a striking, and unusual, rebuke of the thousands of prosecutors who do the daily work of assembling criminal cases across the country. Barr has faced scrutiny for overruling the decisions of Justice Department prosecutors who work for him, including in criminal cases involving associates of President Donald Trump.
A group of Chinese virologists released a strange new paper on Monday that claims the new coronavirus was engineered in a Chinese lab. One of the virologists, Li-Meng Yan, told the Fox News host Tucker Carlson it was a "man-made virus" that the Chinese government released "intentionally." A strange new paper claiming the coronavirus was a "laboratory product" quietly made its way into a repository of preliminary research on Monday.
Twitter has suspended the account of a Chinese virologist who claimed that Covid-19 was “man-made” and created in a Wuhan lab. Dr Li-Meng Yan, who claims to be a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Hong Kong School of Public Health, had her Twitter account suspended by the social media site earlier this week. The virologist, who had more than 60,000 followers on Twitter before her account was suspended, made headlines this week when she claimed to have evidence that the Chinese government was involved in creating the virus, which has so far killed more than 936,156 people worldwide.
Cryobanks have a diversity problem: Many of their donors are white, which creates a dilemma for people of color seeking egg or sperm donors. Non-white parents-to-be have few options if they want children who look like themselves. The problem comes from both supply and demand: Black women are less likely to seek advice about fertility issues, and cryobanks struggle to reach potential donors.

Dorris, 48, was 24 at the time; Trump was 51 and married to Marla Maples.
“The SAT is emblematic of higher education’s failure to keep up with the times...Just the stuff that systemic racism thrives on.”
“These tests create unnecessary stress for young people already dealing with mental health challenges.”
“Dropping the SAT requirement makes it harder for colleges to compare applicants against a common standard.”
“The best predictor of college success overall is a simple one: high school grades.”
“What matters more is a broader push to help minority students get better educations.”
