Nine months ago, Gina Raimondo, then the Rhode Island governor, was in Providence fighting with the state's teachers' unions to open its public schools. Today, Raimondo is in Washington, D.C. Having been confirmed in early March as the commerce secretary, she is working to open semiconductor factories in the United States. A recent global shortage of semiconductors — tiny chips that serve key components in virtually all electronic equipment — has crippled broad swaths of the American economy, the automotive sector in particular.

The New York City Police Department is hunting for a suspect captured on video groping a woman in broad daylight on a borough sidewalk, authorities said. An unidentified man was captured on surveillance footage running up to a 35-year-old female and tackling her from behind before he "reached into her shorts and forcibly grabbed her buttocks," a spokesperson for the NYPD told the Washington Examiner. The incident occurred around 8 a.m.

After a four-day trial and brief deliberations, an Ada County jury on Thursday evening found Ammon Bundy guilty of misdemeanor trespassing and resisting or obstructing officers. Bundy, an Emmett resident known for standoffs with federal officials in Malheur, Oregon, and at his father's ranch in Nevada, faced charges after an August arrest at the Idaho Capitol during the Legislature's special session. Idahoans' reactions to the verdict were mixed, with some pleased to see Bundy face consequences — community service and a $750 fine — for refusing to leave the Statehouse as tensions roiled over COVID-19 measures.
Two paramedics were murdered while transporting a patient in the violence-plagued northern Mexico state of Zacatecas, authorities said Thursday. The paramedics were from the neighboring state of Jalisco and were assigned to transport a patient for treatment to a hospital in Zacatecas when they were killed Wednesday night. Jalisco Gov. Enrique Alfaro said he “deeply condemned and lamented the killings” of the government health workers.

The president called it “remarkable.” President Biden came to Florida on Thursday, Surfside, specifically, to see for himself the incredible aftermath of an unimaginable event — the collapse of the Champlain Towers South. After almost 18 months of a highly politicized response — or maybe non-response — to the deadly coronavirus, in this state and others across the nation, it is breathtaking to see Florida's Republican Gov. DeSantis standing shoulder to shoulder with political rival, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz one day, and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on another — both Democrats.

The fugitive deputy leader of Greece's extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party was jailed on Friday, hours after his capture by the police's anti-terrorism division. Christos Pappas, a 59-year-old former lawmaker, had been on the run for nearly nine months, disappearing before a court sentenced him to 13 years in prison for participation in a criminal organization. He was arrested Thursday on a ground floor apartment in an Athens suburb along with a 52-year-old woman who is facing charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive.

A toxic work environment that is alleged to be inside the office of Vice President Kamala Harris stems from the top, with complicating “power centers” plaguing her road to the White House. President Joe Biden handed Harris a politically fraught portfolio of issues, which could cause some strife within any official's staff, but the complaints are not new. This source called the office discord a “repeat problem” for Harris, adding that the troubles are "not surprising."

An East Los Angeles woman was charged Wednesday with killing her three children, including a baby, earlier this week. Sandra Chico, 28, appeared in court but a judge postponed until next month her arraignment on three counts each of murder and assault on a child causing death. “In an instant, three innocent children were taken from us and we are crestfallen,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

Tropical Storm Elsa strengthened into a hurricane early Friday, and it still has Florida in sight for early next week, although the National Hurricane Center stressed that the forecast is uncertain that far out. The latest forecast calls for Elsa to continue to strengthen over the next day but weaken to a tropical storm while crossing Cuba. In South Florida, officials overseeing the search-and-rescue effort at Champlain Towers South are keeping an eye on Elsa as a possible disruption.

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state on Thursday warned that significant numbers of new COVID-19 cases were being found in the community, raising fears of fresh clusters as it reported a rise in new infections for a third straight day. With state capital Sydney in the middle of a two-week lockdown to contain an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant, authorities said half of Thursday's total of 24 new cases had spent time in the community when infectious. Berejiklian said many people with flu-like symptoms were ignoring lockdown orders and "going about their business".

“Long live the great, glorious, correct Chinese Communist Party!” cried Xi Jinping, China's president and general secretary of the party, as he closed an hourlong speech Thursday marking the party's 100th anniversary. The crowds rose to their feet, waving bright red party flags. It was a gray, drizzly morning of choreographed joy, preceded by a months-long nationwide campaign to propagate an official history that had been airbrushed to erase the tens of millions of deaths caused by Communist Party rule.

Part of me is secretly happy that Bill Cosby is out of prison. Other women also got to share what Cosby did to them. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's ruling Wednesday that District Attorney Kevin Steele had to abide by his predecessor's handshake agreement not to charge Cosby changed the game for him.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava says the bodies of four additional victims have been found in the rubble of a collapsed condo tower in Surfside, Florida, raising the death toll to 16 people. (June 30)

US jobs growth picked up speed in June as the economic reopening continued, official figures show. Employers created a larger-than-expected 850,000 jobs last month, driven by new posts in bars and restaurants, retail and education. Despite the boost in hiring, the unemployment rate was little changed at 5.9%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

California police said they have identified another suspect in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy on July 4th last year. The appeal to the public to help find Deshaune Lumpkin, 18, of San Francisco as a second shooting suspect comes nearly a year after Jace Young was shot and killed on July 4, 2020, San Francisco police said in a news release Thursday. Jace was with his family watching fireworks when he was shot, KTVU reported.

Manhattan prosecutors on Thursday accused the Trump Organization of illegally labeling cash it paid to its CFO as "Holiday Entertainment" in its official books while also keeping spreadsheets showing the money was in fact part of the executive's compensation. It was one of several instances that the district attorney's office points to as showing that the company and its CFO, Allen Weisselberg, evaded paying taxes. In a sweeping 25-page indictment against Weisselberg and the Trump Organization, prosecutors charged them with 15 felony counts including scheme to defraud, conspiracy, grand larceny, tax fraud, and falsifying business records.

It was supposed to be an eight-day getaway, a chance for three South Florida brothers to reconnect with family living in the Dominican Republic amid coronavirus lockdowns and quarantine. The Nalus brothers — three Haitian émigrés who live in Delray Beach — have lost jobs and maybe even a college scholarship. There seems to have been little official public push to help the South Florida brothers, despite the fact that one is a U.S. citizen.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that new and faster spreading variants could mean Africa's third wave is worse than previous surges. The highly transmissible Delta variant is spreading to more and more countries. The continent also lags behind with vaccination, accounting for just under 1.5% of all the vaccines administered globally so far.

Donald Rumsfeld was one of the key figures in shaping the geopolitics of our time — playing a prominent role in taking the US into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and pursuing policies that created bitter divisions at home and abroad. The defence secretary under two US presidents, he was heavily influenced by neo-con ideologues in the George W Bush administration and helped to lay out a blueprint for America's approach to defence and foreign affairs whose consequences reverberate to this day. Rumsfeld, who died on Wednesday at the age of 88, was a veteran politician, a counsellor to Richard Nixon in the 1960s, a senior member of Gerald Ford's administration and Middle-East envoy under Ronald Reagan.

Becky Salisbury and her husband David were in the car on Sunday when they got the news: one of the staff at their pub, the Alford Arms in Berkhamsted, had tested positive for Covid. "It's frustrating," says Becky. Becky and David are far from the only ones in this situation.

It was the middle of the night in Surfside, Florida, but Margarita Champin had heard a noise that had shaken her – like an explosion. Naïm said he's not the scared type; he travels for work and knows how to take care of himself.

If you don't set your phone to airplane mode, you may rack up overseas roaming charges. After six years working on ships for a major cruise line, I've witnessed tons of travel blunders that prevent guests from having the best possible experience. Passengers usually come on the ship excited for a good time, and for many, this involves a drinks package.

While some people charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol have shown remorse for their actions and taken plea deals, Thomas Robertson has posted defiant messages on social media and, according to court records, defied a judge's order to amass an arsenal of weapons. The former Rocky Mount, Virginia, police officer who stormed the Capitol with his cop buddy and posted a photograph of them inside the building on Instagram was arrested Jan. 13 and released on several conditions, one of which was not to possess firearms. The search came after the FBI reviewed emails in Robertson's Yahoo account that led to records from Gunbroker.com.

“Obamacare is getting stronger every time the Republicans try to kill it.”
“It is far from certain the Supreme Court will safeguard the Affordable Care Act the next time the law reaches the court’s chambers.”
“Although ACA cost Obama an enormous amount, it’s become clear that he will have the last laugh.”
“Even the feistiest Republicans have given up talking seriously about repeal.”
“Current and future cases will largely concern the administration and enforcement of the ACA, not its underlying architecture.”
