Attorney Michael Avenatti joins protesters outside the White House on July 17, 2018. WASHINGTON — “I’m one of the few people who can beat Donald Trump if I decide to run for the U.S. presidency.” The man who confidently utters these words is not a senator or governor, not even a junior congressman. Michael Avenatti, the Los Angeles lawyer, is best known for representing Stephanie Clifford, an adult film actress (you may know her as Stormy Daniels) who claims to have had an affair with President Trump.
Long Island resident Ronald DeRisi, 74, was arrested Friday and charged with threatening to assault and murder two U.S. senators over their support for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Starting in late September, the man allegedly left more than 10 threatening voicemails at the offices of two unidentified senators about Kavanaugh’s nomination and confirmation, according to a Department of Justice release. Late last month, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh had tried to rape her in high school.

In the second and final debate of a contentious Texas U.S. Senate campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, used his closing argument to discuss the importance of protecting Americans who had pre-existing health conditions. “On Obamacare, I want to repeal Obamacare, reduce premiums, protect pre-existing conditions and expand access,” said Cruz. This is an interesting position for Cruz, who spent much of his first term in the Senate railing against Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which guarantees protections for those with pre-existing conditions. In 2013, Cruz engineered a 16-day shutdown of the government in an effort to defund the program.

When Dave Brat shocked the political world in 2014, beating the man who was set to become the next speaker of the House in a Republican primary, his congressional district was more favorable to Republicans than it is now. The outcome of Brat’s contest against Democrat Abigail Spanberger will speak volumes on election night — less than three weeks from now — about the size of a potential Democratic wave.

When Christine Blasey Ford came forward last month to accuse Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in high school, it turned an already heated Supreme Court confirmation fight into a national referendum on demeaning, disrespectful and even criminal behavior by men toward women. Although Kavanaugh vehemently denied professor Ford’s allegations, the debate made us wonder how many men out there had witnessed or been involved in sexual misconduct against women that they’d prefer not to talk about.
There were few surprises when Saudi Arabia finally admitted what most of the world already believed: Jamal Khashoggi, the missing dissident journalist, had indeed been killed at its Istanbul consulate. The gist of the explanation that emerged in a late-night flurry of statements via state-run media had been widely trailed – as much by President Donald Trump, who had quickly suggested “rogue killers” were to blame, as anyone else. It effectively dismissed Turkish claims that he had been murdered by a Saudi hit squad flown into the country for the job, and insulated Mohammed Bin Salman, the young Saudi crown prince, from blame.
