Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate in April following the retirement of Thad Cochran, faces Democrat Mike Espy in a Nov. 27 runoff election. Cindy Hyde-Smith on voter suppression: "And then they remind me, that there's a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who that maybe we don't want to vote. “For a state like Mississippi, where voting rights were obtained through sweat and blood, everyone should appreciate that this is not a laughing matter,” Espy spokesman Danny Blanton said of Hyde-Smith’s remarks.
BJ's Wholesale Club is among the big name stores whose doors will be locked on November 22. Retailers began pushing the limits in 2010 when Sears was the first to announce they would open late on Thanksgiving and stay open overnight. Fellow stores like Walmart and Target soon followed the controversial decision, opening the floodgates to stores of all sizes to open on the holiday.
North Korea is reportedly continuing to develop its ballistic missile program. Satellite images appear to show numerous hidden bases in the country. But the president reassured Americans on Twitter. Following a summit with the U.S., North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to dismantle his country’s main nuclear site.
NEW YORK ― Locals are being force-fed a Silicon Valley-sized meal, and all they can hope is that they don’t get poisoned. This week, Amazon announced its plans for a gigantic corporate campus in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. In a matter of 15 years, this waterfront community of 20,000 will absorb a gargantuan development with 8 million square feet of office space ― the equivalent of three Empire State Buildings, The New York Times points out ― and tens of thousands of daily workers. Meanwhile, Amazon will receive $1.7 billion in incentives from the state and another $1.3 billion from the city, including a taxpayer-funded helicopter pad, just for moving in.
First, it’s helpful to remember Florida has never conducted a statewide hand recount. The 2000 recount was conducted statewide by a machine count, with four counties participating in a hand recount: Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Volusia.
As search crews found another body Wednesday in a house burned by a massive Southern California wildfire, officials fear many more deaths in the destructive blazes at both ends of the state that have now claimed 59 lives. It was a historic night for James as he passed Wilt Chamberlain for fifth on the all-time NBA scoring list midway through last night's game in the fourth quarter with 39 points. Singer Pink‘s husband Carey Hart‘s post — warning looters in Malibu, the location of the Woolsey Fire, that they “will be shot on” sight — has gone viral.

The pound plunged against the dollar and euro Thursday after ministers, including Britain's Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit in protest against a draft deal to exit the EU. The latest market gyrations came as the nation's business sector gave a lukewarm verdict to the proposed agreement, and amid worries that British Prime Minister Theresa May could soon face a no-confidence vote. "There's been a sharp move lower in the pound ... after Brexit minister Raab announced his resignation," said XTB analyst David Cheetham.
An iconic 1972 painting by British artist David Hockney soared to $90.3 million at Christie's on Thursday, smashing the record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a work by a living artist. With Christie's commission, "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)," surpassed the auction house's pre-sale estimate of about $80 million, following a bidding war between two determined would-be buyers once the work hit $70 million. The previous record for a work by a living artist was held by Jeff Koons' sculpture "Balloon Dog," which sold for $58.4 million in 2013.
With Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives, Trevor Noah noted on Wednesday’s “Daily Show” that they were ready to investigate President Donald Trump on a slew of matters. “Wow,” Noah said, “Mitch McConnell is brilliant. For that reason, he said, he had a video that Democrats would be required to watch, much like the sexual harassment videos that employers show to their employees.

Lawmakers trying to oust Nancy Pelosi started rallying behind a possible contender Thursday, but the House Democratic leader gained key endorsements and said she has "overwhelming support" to become the next speaker. Pelosi picked up backing from Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., the civil rights leader, while a who's-who of Democrats — including former Vice President Al Gore and former Secretary of State John Kerry — advocated on her behalf.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a good pumpkin pie, but every Thanksgiving I try to push the boundaries of this festive gourd. Think about it: gooey, fudgy chocolate swirled with dense cheesecake tinted with earthy pumpkin and warm spices. A combo of bittersweet and semisweet chocolate is used to make a ganache with ― wait for it ― brown butter for rich, nutty notes before getting amped up by instant espresso, cocoa powder and vanilla.
Prosecutors in New Jersey announced charges against Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt, who they allege made up a story on fundraising site GoFundMe in an effort to keep the money for themselves. Prosecutors say the story that Bobbitt was a homeless man who used his last $20 to pay for McClure’s gas wasn’t true, and was fabricated to earn people’s sympathy so they would contribute to a fundraising campaign whose stated purpose was to help Bobbitt financially.
The toll in the deadliest wildfires in recent California history climbed to 59 on Wednesday as authorities released a list of 130 people still missing. Most of those unaccounted for are from the Butte County town of Paradise, in northern California, which was virtually erased from the map by the so-called “Camp Fire” blaze that erupted last week. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told journalists Wednesday evening that 461 search and rescue personnel and 22 cadaver dogs were involved in the effort to locate those missing and DNA testing was being expedited to identify the victims.
The U.S. Justice Department said it is planning to prosecute controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Sources told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that the department is also hopeful it will get Assange ― who has been holed up in an Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012 ― into a U.S. courtroom. Then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April 2017 that the arrest of Assange would become a priority for the Justice Department.
President Emmanuel Macron has promised to attune himself more to grassroots France as he tries to dispel a reputation for arrogance and rekindle his flagging popularity. In a prime-time TV interview on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier late Wednesday after hosting dozens of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, at World War I commemorations, an unusually self-critical Macron admitted he has struggled to unite his people. "I have not succeeded in reconciling the French with their leaders," he told the TF1 network as France braced for nationwide protests Saturday over spiralling fuel costs that have especially angered rural voters.

It’s October, and my eighth-grader is late getting home from school. “Where are you?” I text as I walk out the door to pick up my youngest. I expect him to say the bus is running late or that there’s a sub who doesn’t know the route ― replies I’ve heard
Under state law, the Florida Department of State must trigger a manual recount if an electronic recount of ballots finds a margin of victory of less than 0.25 percent. Elections officials were expected to inspect by hand any ballots that were designated undervotes or overvotes, cases where the machine that reviewed the ballot concluded that a voter had skipped a contest or marked more than one selection. The order came after U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee, Florida, cleared the way to include ballots from as many as 5,000 people across the state who submitted ballots by mail that were rejected by election officials.
Democrat Gil Cisneros has grabbed a narrow lead for the first time in the last undecided U.S. House contest in California. Cisneros is battling Republican Young Kim to replace retiring Republican Rep. Ed Royce in Southern California's 39th District. With ballots still being counted, an update Thursday showed Cisneros with a 941-vote lead, after Kim held an early edge in the contest.
Let me start by saying Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. As our family continues to grow, there’s always a new face at the Thanksgiving table with new nutritional preferences. As much as I plan and obsess, without fail every year there always seems to be someone who exclaims they are dairy-free or gluten-free or vegan or vegetarian, and I’m left scrambling to find something for them to eat.
Schools and tourist attractions across the San Francisco Bay Area were shut Friday and residents were urged to remain indoors as smoke from California's deadliest ever wildfire -- a three-hour drive away -- produced air quality levels worse than in polluted megacities in South Asia. The closures came as the number of people missing from the giant Camp Fire, which has devoured an area roughly the size of Chicago since it broke out last week, soared to more than 600, with 63 confirmed dead. President Donald Trump is set to visit the tinder-dry state on Saturday to meet victims of the inferno, which has laid waste to the town of Paradise at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, destroying around 10,000 homes.
The death toll in Northern California’s Camp fire rose once again on Thursday to 63 as rescue workers continue to search through the devastation left by the state’s deadliest blaze in history, authorities said. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told those gathered at a news briefing that the number of missing persons reflected ongoing work by emergency response personnel sifting through reports, but said many of the unaccounted for may simply be displaced in shelters throughout the region. “The reason that that number went up is because after they went up, [emergency officials] didn’t stop working, they continued to work into the night,” Honea said.
Californian native Ron Westbrook saw his house burn down in this week’s horrific wildfires, but has since found out his 1915 Ford Model T is perfectly intact on a trailer at the end of his driveway. The cars that sat in his garage were burnt to ashes,
