The incident occurred around 8 a.m.

The president called it “remarkable.” President Biden came to Florida on Thursday, Surfside, specifically, to see for himself the incredible aftermath of an unimaginable event — the collapse of the Champlain Towers South. After almost 18 months of a highly politicized response — or maybe non-response — to the deadly coronavirus, in this state and others across the nation, it is breathtaking to see Florida's Republican Gov. DeSantis standing shoulder to shoulder with political rival, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz one day, and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on another — both Democrats.

But delegates and U.N. officials said they could not agree among themselves on several proposals circulating, prompting organisers to extend the talks originally planned to last four days.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Myanmar's military on Thursday to release Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint now, a U.N. spokesperson said on Thursday, a day after thousands of other detainees were freed. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the army took power on Feb. 1 and ousted Suu Kyi's elected government. "We reiterate our call for the immediate release of all of those who are arbitrarily detained, and that includes President Win Myint and State councilor Aung San Suu Kyi," said Eri Kaneko, associate spokesperson for Guterres.
“We went to the screams of the people and we were trying to figure out where we can go to help them,” Lovellette told reporters Thursday, a week later, after he and his colleagues met with President Joe Biden and Gov. Ron DeSantis. Lovellette, who responded to the building collapse with Officers Ariol Lage and Kemuel Gambirazio, said the trio rushed to the south side of the building looking for survivors. “It's getting in our eyes; we had to keep wiping our eyes,” said Lovellette, who was the acting sergeant on the scene.

An East Los Angeles woman was charged Wednesday with killing her three children, including a baby, earlier this week. Sandra Chico, 28, appeared in court but a judge postponed until next month her arraignment on three counts each of murder and assault on a child causing death. “In an instant, three innocent children were taken from us and we are crestfallen,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

The storm clouds that had gathered over Sir Keir Starmer have lifted, for now, with Labour's narrow victory in Batley and Spen, but the danger of being ousted before the next general election remains. Many Labour MPs believe the moment of maximum danger for Sir Keir will come next year, when rivals will make their move if he has failed to make significant headway against the Tories. Kim Leadbeater may have achieved a Labour hold in Batley, but the fact remains that a seat with a near-9,000 Labour majority just four years ago is now a hyper-marginal with a majority of just 323.

Phylicia Rashad has found herself embroiled in controversy after expressing public support for Bill Cosby's release from prison, with some prominent Black voices calling for her dismissal as dean of Howard University's College of Fine Arts. It remains to be seen whether Rashad's position at Howard is in jeopardy, but the university quickly distanced itself from her comments. Rashad, who played Cosby's wife for years on the family sitcom “The Cosby Show,” was named dean of the college with great fanfare this year.

Some parties to the Iran nuclear talks need more time before resuming negotiations in Vienna and a new round is unlikely before next week, Russia's envoy said on Thursday. Iran and the United States have been holding indirect talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers that imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions. "The #ViennaTalks on #JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) will resume as soon as all the participating states are ready for what is supposed to be the final stage of negotiations," Mikhail Ulyanov, Moscow's ambassador to the U.N. atomic watchdog, said on Twitter.

Tropical Storm Elsa strengthened into a hurricane early Friday, and it still has Florida in sight for early next week, although the National Hurricane Center stressed that the forecast is uncertain that far out. The latest forecast calls for Elsa to continue to strengthen over the next day but weaken to a tropical storm while crossing Cuba. In South Florida, officials overseeing the search-and-rescue effort at Champlain Towers South are keeping an eye on Elsa as a possible disruption.

Bill Cosby did not walk free because he wasn't guilty of drugging and then sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004 — or as he preferred to see it, of “dancing outside” of his marriage. That turned out to be a death sentence, since by the time Coones was freed last November, the cancer that had gone undetected behind bars was so advanced that he died in February, at age 64, after just 108 days of freedom.

Amazon is asking that the new head of the Federal Trade Commission step aside from antitrust investigations into the e-commerce giant, contending that her past public criticism of the company's market power makes it impossible for her to be impartial. Amazon petitioned the agency Wednesday to remove Chair Lina Khan from taking part in current probes of the company's market conduct. Khan has been a fierce critic of tech giants Facebook, Google and Apple, as well as Amazon.

The body of a Miami firefighter's daughter has been found in the ruins of the partially collapsed condo tower in Surfside. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez confirmed to the Miami Herald the girl was the daughter of a Miami firefighter who was at the recovery site supporting the rescue effort, though he was not digging.
