Downing Street has insisted the decision about whether India will be added to the 'red list' - meaning travel to and from the country will be further restricted - will be made independently, despite Boris Johnson having cancelled his own plans today. Professor Andrew Hayward, a member of both Sage and Nervtag, said ministers should "act sooner rather than later" in shutting the borders, but stressed that it was a "political decision". However that was contradicted by the Prime Minister and his team.
When Oregon legalized recreational marijuana in 2015, much of conservative Eastern Oregon did not join the green rush. Ontario, a town of about 11,000 people on the Idaho border, voted against allowing pot sales in 2016 โ and then the smaller town of Huntington, 30 miles northwest of Ontario and 30 minutes farther from Boise, allowed dispensaries to open and was flooded with cash from Idaho weed tourists, Politico reports. "Huntington was soon receiving $100,000 in tax revenue from a single marijuana shop โ half the 400-person city's annual budget."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has asked Emergent BioSolutions Inc to halt producing new materials for COVID-19 vaccines until the regulator completes an inspection of its plant in Baltimore, which is under scrutiny after millions of doses were thrown away due to a manufacturing error. Johnson & Johnson, which was put in charge of manufacturing at the plant in April after the incident by the U.S. government, said it would work with Emergent and the FDA to address any findings at the end of the inspection. "At this time, it is premature to speculate on any potential impact this could have on the timing of our vaccine deliveries," J&J said.
Bankruptcy, especially as portrayed by bankruptcy lawyers, promises "a fresh start from your debts," John Oliver said on Sunday's Last Week Tonight. Between 800,000 and 1.5 million Americans file for bankruptcy each year, "and many worry that once the current pandemic assistance stops, more and more people will need the type of help" bankruptcy offers. The process gives people a chance to dig out from under a mountain of debt, but it does hit your credit score, and it carries a "completely misguided" social stigma, he said.

John Kerry has also apologised for former President Donald Trump's โnon-leadershipโ on the effort to address the climate crisis during his four years as US leader.
In the more than a year that I've been writing about Sarah Gonzales-McLinn, who was essentially being held in sexual slavery in Lawrence, Kansas when she killed her rapist at age 19, I've never stopped wondering what the Douglas County jury was thinking back in 2015. Most news reports blandly referred to Hal Sasko, the former employer she drugged and then nearly decapitated in January of 2014, as her 52-year-old roommate. The jury quickly decided that Gonzales-McLinn had killed Sasko in an especially heinous, atrocious or cruel manner, too.

A Palm Beach County doctor has lost his medical license earlier this month after his third Florida discipline issue, this one involving a new mother who bled to death after a difficult delivery in 2017. Dr. Berto Lopez, administrative hearing judge Robert Cohen said, erred in several ways, most prominently going home while the new mother remained in critical condition at West Palm Beach's Good Samaritan Hospital. Lopez] leaving the hospital at a time when he believe everything to be under control and the time had come for him to go home, clean up and go to sleep for the night was where his failure to complete his care for his patient, led, ultimately, to her untimely death,โ Cohen wrote.

โHigh-speed rail is bold and attention-grabbing, but the scale of the project makes it near impossible.โ
โWhile a long, slow train ride across the country can be a great thing, the US needs real high-speed rail too.โ
โLiberals are right that America has a car problem โ but it's commutes, not road trips, that suck.โ
โInvestments into a high-speed rail system wouldnโt just improve the railroads โ automobile traffic could also see some relief.โ
โBig cities that are reasonably close together is pretty much a prerequisite for high-speed rail.โ
