Newsom Lauds Oakley, Disney For Doing Their Part Amid Coronavirus

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA —Orange County's businesses of Oakley and Disney were among those thanked by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday, for doing their part to stem the tide of coronavirus cases in California.

In April, Oakley shifted much of its manufacturing to include the construction of face shields for medical workers in North America and Europe during the coronavirus pandemic. Oakley, a fashion eye-wear focused brand based in Orange County's Foothill Ranch, changed their tactic from sunglasses to manufacturing face masks and scrubs using manufacturing materials on-hand in their warehouses, Stylus.com reported.

"This is a good example of a brand identifying an area where their specific facilities and materials can be of benefit to others, instead of simply following the PPE trend," Stylus reported.

Disneyland Resort was also lauded by Newsom for not moving too swiftly into reopening the resort.

After planning on a July 17 reopening date, the parks backed off, erring on the side of caution to wait on state guidelines for theme park reopenings. This decision, also amid a refusal of union workers to return to their posts.

Disneyland Resort spokesman Thomas Smith released a statement on that issue, Thursday, saying:

"In order to reopen the theme parks, we need to negotiate agreements with our unions to return employees to work. We have had positive discussions and are very pleased to have signed agreements from 20 union affiliates, including the Master Services Council, which represents more than 11,000 of our cast members. The signed agreement details plans that include enhanced safety protocols that will allow us to responsibly reopen, and get thousands of our cast members back to work.

We thank our cast and guests for their patience during this unprecedented time while we await approval from government officials."
