Newspapers to shift to mail delivery this week

Starting Tuesday, the U.S. Postal Service will begin delivering The Galesburg Register-Mail, Canton Daily Ledger, Kewanee Star Courier, The McDonough County Voice and Pekin Daily Times.

The change is part of parent company Gannett's effort to improve delivery consistency and optimize resources amidst ongoing labor challenges, fluctuating fuel prices, competition for workers from door-to-door delivery services and increasing digital demand.

The papers are expected to arrive in the mail on the same day. Sunday papers will be delivered with Saturday's mail.

The transition ensures print subscribers will continue to enjoy timely home deliveries, while benefiting from the Postal Service’s network and expertise to improve customer service and mitigate challenges of inconsistent delivery some subscribers have experienced.

If reading the newspaper is part of your daily routine, early morning "delivery" of the e-edition of these papers, known as the eNewspaper, will continue, and our websites still will share news and sports information for central Illinois round-the-clock.

If you are a subscriber and haven't checked out the eNewspaper yet, electronic replicas of our print products are available at galesburg.com/eNewspaper, cantondailyledger.com/eNewspaper, starcourier.com/eNewspaper, mcdonoughvoice.com/eNewspaper and pekintimes.com/eNewspaper.

We know this is an adjustment, and we appreciate our readers' patience and understanding as we implement this change.

Gannett Co. Inc., which operates more than 200 daily local newspapers, has already successfully introduced the approach in multiple markets and now plans an expansion as digital subscriptions are surging.
