Newton boys edge ADM in regular-season finale

Feb. 19—ADEL — Newton's boys' basketball team will go into the postseason on a win.

Brody Bauer collected his second career double-double, three players scored in double-figures and the Cardinals rallied in the fourth quarter to win 51-48.

The Tigers led by five at halftime. They lost the game by three and missed 15 free throws.

Bauer had 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, Adam Mattes finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists and Jake Ingle put in 12 points for the Cardinals, who outscored the Tigers 13-7 in the fourth.

Keith Moko also had nine points, three rebounds and four assists and Trent Hamand grabbed three boards. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Cardinals.

Newton (8-12) won the game despite shooting just 36 percent from the field. They did hit seven 3-pointers, were 12-of-13 from the charity stripe and committed just 10 turnovers.

ADM (9-12) hit 49 percent of its shots but made only 4-of-11 from 3 and 8-of-23 from the line.

Vince Benetti had 16 points and six rebounds and Sam Hlas put in 13 points for ADM.

The Cardinals open Class 3A substate play against Knoxville at 7 p.m. on Monday in Newton.
