Newton boys edge PCM at C-M Golf Invitational

May 10—COLFAX — A missed putt or a shanked drive turned out to be pretty big for Newton and PCM's boys golf teams during the Colfax-Mingo Invitational on Saturday. Every shot mattered.

The two schools were separated by just one stroke and for the second time this spring, the Cardinals came out on top.

Newton won the 18-hole tournament with a 360 and Ethan Walker was the only golfer to shoot under 80 for medalist honors.

"I was proud of our kids for coming through with another team championship," Newton boys golf coach Pat Riley said.

All five teams in attendance played the Colfax Country Club course in windy and wet conditions.

"It was another challenging day to play golf," PCM boys golf coach Mike Cardin said. "It's really taking a toll on the mental aspect of the game. Our players know they can shoot better than the card says, but the conditions just make it rough."

Walker won medalist honors after firing a 37 the second time around on the nine-hole course. He carded a 40 on the first trip.

Colfax-Mingo's Jason Rhinehart was the runner-up medalist. He fired a 43 and a 41 for a season-best 84.

The Tigerhawks finished fourth in the team standings after shooting a 482. Pleasantville was third with a 407. Lynnville-Sully's six golfers played the first nine holes before withdrawing from the tournament.

Of the players who participated in all 18 holes, nine of the top 10 finishers were from either Newton, PCM or Colfax-Mingo.

PCM's Grant Landgrebe finished third overall with a career-best 85 and Andrew Mitchell was fourth with an 87.

Newton's Lincoln Ergenbright finished fifth with a 90 and PCM's Gatlin Boell ended up sixth with a 93.

After Pleasantville's Jake Hiemstra (94) in seventh, Newton's Derek Lanser and PCM's Gabe Lanphier tied for eighth with a 96 and Newton's Kinnick Pritchard was 10th with a 97.

"We ended up in a good place but it didn't feel like it because our scores were so high," Cardin said. "We keep hoping for one nice day to play."

Newton's two non-counting scores came from Braydon Chance (103) and Brody Cazett (105). PCM's non-counting scores were turned in by Grant Van Veen (100) and Brayden Berger (102).

"The greens were tough today as they were really hard and very fast," said Riley, who is a Colfax-Mingo alum. "I am not surprised to see higher scores from all the players and teams."

Colfax-Mingo's other three counting scores came from Jake Nichols (123), Shane Aikin (123) and Cale Duffy (152).

Keegan DeWitt shot a 55 for L-S before the Hawks withdraw after nine holes.

Carsten James carded a 56, Deven Liekweg turned in a 58 and C.J. Nikkel had a 63. Karter Smead (66) and Luke Kramer (67) also played nine holes.
