Newton receives nearly $1 million grant to revitalize Recreation Center

The town of Newton has received a $950,000 grant from the state of North Carolina to fund revitalization efforts in the Central Recreation Center.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce is providing the grant.

The money will support renovation projects at the Recreation Center, which has a long history. It opened in 1936 as Central High School.

It is now operated by the Newton Parks and Recreation Department and is located on South Ervin Avenue. The center is still a hub for young people and seniors.

The award was funded through the Community Development Block Grant Neighborhood Revitalization Program.
