Newtown native Brandon Cottom voted off 'Survivor,' but he's still got a role to play

On the gridiron, Brandon Cottom knows to avoid the blindside.

Unfortunately for the Newton native, he didn't take that knowledge into "Survivor."

His quest to be named winner of the 44th season came to an abrupt end on the April 19 episode.

But former NFL player isn't quite done with the show.

Cottom had come up empty during the episode's immunity challenge, failing to win the necklace that would prevent him from being voted out at the next Tribal Council.

The bad luck continued as Cottom went into the vote apparently unaware that Danny Massa hatched a plan with other tribe mates, using a hidden immunity idol to save Cottom's target and send him packing instead.

On the hit reality-show contest, that's known as a blindside vote.

With his exodus, Cottom becomes the second member of this season's jury. In each season final of "Survivor," the jury votes to decide who becomes the winner, or "Sole Survivor."

From Newtown to 'Survivor 44'

Before being selected as a castaway, Cottom was a standout running back on the Purdue Boilermakers football team.

From Purdue, joined the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League.

After his time with the Seahawks, Cottom joined the Alliance of American Football and last played professional football in 2019 as a member of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League.

"Survivor" airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS. The season finale, in which Cottom's vote will decide the winner, is set to air May 24.
