BOYNE CITY — With the help of educators across five regional school districts, the Great Lakes Center for the Arts’s Next Gen program recently brought the performing arts into schools for the very first time.

The first “On the Road!” show, "We Can Do It: American Women in History," traveled to Boyne City, East Jordan, Charlevoix and Ellsworth schools on March 16 and 17. The show featured appearances from famous trailblazers including Amelia Earhart, Nellie Bly, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth, Mae Jemison and more to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of women in America.

“Students got a chance to learn about wonderful women in history and how they’ve contributed to where we are today. Women’s History month reminds girls and boys, students and adults, just what fantastic work American women have done,” said Next Gen director Dr. Rachel Sytsma-Reed.

“Usually, when students come to Next Gen shows, they’re welcomed into the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, but this time, we did something we’ve never done before: our first 'On the Road' show. It’s our hope that this helps make the arts even more accessible for all area youth."
