A tweet from NFL Next Gen Stats during the fourth quarter of the Cincinnati Bengals' playoff win against the Baltimore Ravens about Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley coming close to crossing the plane before the ball was jarred loose by Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson and recovered and returned 98 yards for a touchdown by defensive end Sam Hubbard mentioned a chip in the football.

That drew Twitter reactions from football fans who had no idea that such a football chip exists and wondered why officials still use sticks and a chain for first-down measurements during games.

League officials confirmed several years ago that chips were inserted into footballs to provide additional data, but added that the technology would not help with spotting the ball.
