Next storm takes aim at Quebec with 10-20+ cm of snow possible into Saturday

The storm parade continues across eastern Canada this week, with another disruptive winter system sliding over Quebec late Friday into Saturday. This latest storm threatens a new round of heavy snow and gusty winds across areas that saw some significant impacts just a few days ago.

Some communities could see major snowfall totals from this system. Gusty winds and blowing snow will make travel difficult and dangerous at times. Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and to adapt to the changing and rapidly deteriorating conditions.

Friday night through Saturday

A significant winter storm rolling over the Great Lakes on Friday will begin pushing into Quebec late Friday night.

Snow will arrive in southern and western Quebec through the overnight hours, spreading into Quebec City and the surrounding areas by early Saturday morning.

The heaviest snow will fall Friday overnight and into Saturday morning, with lighter precipitation and some mixing with rain moving into southern areas by Saturday afternoon. Latest computer models keep Montreal on the cold side of the storm, with a very brief chance of rain Saturday afternoon.

There's also the risk for freezing rain and ice pellets to develop during the transition from snow to rain.

Heavier snowfall is forecast in downtown Montreal this time around, in the range of 15-20 cm. Between 20-30 cm is expected north of the St. Lawrence.

The heaviest snow will also be met with winds gusting between 50-80+ km/h, which may create blowing snow, whiteouts and problematic winter driving Saturday morning. This is especially true near Quebec city.

Conditions improve Saturday evening in the south, as snow makes its way through the Gaspé Peninsula. Quebec will be left with a week of below freezing temperatures and piercing wind chills for the first time this winter season.
