Nexus office searched by state and county police. Here's some background.

The Virginia State Police and August County Sheriffs Office executed search warrants at the Verona office of Nexus Services, and in a Fishersville neighborhood where the company's owners live.

Here's a quick history of the company and its past dealings with law enforcement and the courts, and links to previous stories about Nexus that have appeared in The News Leader.

— Nexus helps post bond through third-party licensed bondsmen with federally-approved insurance companies for people being held in immigration detention centers while they await court cases.

— The company grew rapidly, with headquarters in Verona but also offices in other American cities.

— A Nexus founder owned a home in recent years (and may still) in the Windward Pointe neighborhood of Fishersville near the Food Lion. Also, Nexus at one time owned several other homes nearby that the company rented to people who were clients out on bond. Neighbors previously had complained about armed private security personnel patrolling the neighborhood on behalf of Nexus. Company officials said it was necessary because the Augusta County Sheriff's Office had a grudge against them.

— A swirl of legal challenges has encompassed Nexus in recent years. An officer of the company faced federal tax charges and a judge in another state threatened to put Nexus in receivership due to outstanding debts.
