NFA, Griswold cruise to ECC boys basketball wins: Tuesday's top performers

The Norwich Free Academy boys basketball team improved to 7-9 following a victory over Woodstock Academy at Alumni Gymnasium in Norwich. The Wildcats have gone 7-5 after an 0-4 start and are gearing up for the upcoming Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) and Division I state tournaments.

The ECC boys basketball tournament begins on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the site of the higher seed.

NFA will compete in the Division I state tournament, which begins on March 6. The Wildcats are ranked No. 13 in the 16-team field.

Griswold (15-2), which has clinched the ECC Division III division title, continued to roll with a victory over Montville. The Wolverines are ranked No. 2 in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Division IV tournament ratings.

Girls basketball

In girls basketball, Plainfield cruised to a victory over Montville.

The ECC Division I and II girls basketball tournament gets underway next week with first round games at the site of the higher seed on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The quarterfinals are Thursday, Feb. 16 at the site of the higher seed. The four semifinal games will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Plainfield High School.

The ECC girls championship doubleheader is Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Mohegan Sun Arena (6 and 8 p.m.).

Boys basketball

Tony Williams, Norwich Free Academy: Junior guard poured in a game-high 29 points to lift the Wildcats (8-9) to a 64-52 victory against Woodstock Academy.

Edwin Santana, Norwich Free Academy: Senior forward scored 10 points in the Wildcats' win against Woodstock Academy (4-12).

Jeff Souvenance, Griswold: Senior forward poured in 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while leading the Wolverines (15-2) to a 72-54 win over Montville.

Michael Strain, Griswold: Senior forward posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds in a win against Montville (6-9).

Jack Gahrman, Norwich Tech: Junior forward scored a team-high 25 points but the Warriors (4-13) fell short, 93-75, against Cheney Tech.

Malaki Mercado, Norwich Tech: Senior forward scored 14 points in a Connecticut Technical Conference (CTC) loss against Cheney Tech (11-6).

Girls basketball

Maddie Nordstrom, Plainfield: Junior forward drained four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to lift the Panthers (10-8) to a 65-43 victory over Montville.

Morgan Yonush, Plainfield: Junior forward scored 16 points as the Panthers captured a third straight win with a victory against Montville (2-16).

Kylie Damble, Ellis Tech: Junior forward posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles (11-7) to a 50-49 win over Prince Tech.

Kiara Cartier, Ellis Tech: Sophomore made two 3-pointers and finished with 11 points in a CTC win against Prince Tech (6-11).
