NFL mock draft: Arizona Cardinals trade Kyler Murray for Cleveland Browns' Baker Mayfield

Kyler Murray trade speculation has found its way into an NFL mock draft.

CBS Sports' Josh Edwards has the Cardinals trading their starting quarterback to the Cleveland Browns in his most recent NFL mock draft for the 2022 NFL draft.

Arizona gets Browns starter Baker Mayfield and the No. 13 overall pick in return in Edwards' first-round NFL draft projection.

With that No. 13 pick, Edwards has the Cardinals landing Cincinnati junior cornerback Ahmad Gardner.

He wrote: "Kyler Murray scrapped all mention of Arizona from his social media and it hasn't exactly been a banner year for Baker Mayfield on the field. It could be in the best interest of each to move on with their careers elsewhere. With that being said, Murray's representatives probably did not like the contract-extension figures that the Cardinals were offering and the social media purge was his way of making a statement. He is probably seeking an extension in the ballpark of Josh Allen and Arizona is not comfortable paying it given his injury history and the way the season ended. At the end of the day, this probably all gets sorted out and the two parties move on together but here is a scenario in which this could play out."

The Cardinals also currently own the No. 23 pick in the draft scheduled for April 28 and Edwards projects Arizona to take Iowa junior offensive lineman Tyler Linderbaum with that selection.

He writes of that pick: "After landing Gardner earlier in the round, Arizona nabs Linderbaum in the back half of the first round. The Cardinals fill two needs in an offensive makeover. Linderbaum is an athletic player who finishes with vigor in space."

Interestingly, Edwards isn't the first person to entertain the idea of the Cardinals trading Murray for Mayfield.

Sportsnaut's Vincent Frank recently suggested the swap of former Oklahoma quarterbacks in his look at five potential trade scenarios for Murray and the Cardinals.

In addition to a first-round pick and Mayfield, he had Cleveland sending cornerback Denzel Ward to Arizona in his proposed deal.

He wrote: "A trade involving two former No. 1 picks? This isn’t the NBA. That will be the response from some. However, it must be noted that Baker Mayfield joins Murray as a quarterback with a questionable contract situation. Following a down and drama-filled 2021 season, Cleveland seems intent on having Mayfield play out the final year of his rookie contract. That could end up being a recipe for disaster given his enigmatic ways. As you can see, the former Heisman winner struggled big time in 2021 after putting up a breakout 2020 performance. Arizona would be betting that a change of scenery would do him well. Sure he’s not on the same level as Murray. That’s why the Browns are forced to deal away one of the best young cornerbacks in the NFL in that of two-time Pro Bowler Denzel Ward to make this work. For Arizona, cornerback continues to be a major need. That’s especially true with the likes of Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr., Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett existing in the NFC West."

After Murray scrubbed his Instagram account of all but two photos, speculation surrounding the quarterback and his future with the team took off.

Was the quarterback trying to send a message to the Cardinals? Was the scrubbing a ploy to get a new contract?

Several sites even speculated about potential fits for Murray, should Arizona decide to trade the quarterback and odds were even released for his potential next team.

The Cardinals even followed in Murray's Instagram footsteps, scrubbing their account of all but two posts, the same amount of posts Murray has on his account.

It looks like mock drafts are just the next step in the evolution of speculation surrounding the quarterback and his future in Arizona.
