NFL-National Football League roundup

June 13 (The Sports Xchange) - Houston Texans rookie outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney had sports hernia surgery, coach Bill O'Brien said Friday at NRG Stadium. Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, will miss next week's mandatory three-day minicamp and is expected to return for training camp, which begins in late July. - - The Kansas City Chiefs released cornerback Brandon Flowers in a move that is projected to save the team $7.25 million in salary cap space next season. A second-round pick in 2008 out of Virginia Tech, Flowers played in 88 games with 87 starts in six seasons with the Chiefs. - - Cornerback Chris Houston, who underwent toe surgery in May, was released by the Detroit Lions one season into a five-year, $25 million deal. - - The Lions signed first-round draft pick Eric Ebron, a tight end from North Carolina. The Lions have all their rookie draft picks under contract. - - The Indianapolis Colts placed safety Corey Lynch on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. The Colts signed Lynch as a free agent in November 2013. In five games with Indianapolis last season, Lynch had six special teams tackles. - - New York Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason has a ligament tear and a small fracture to the sesamoid in his right foot but hopes to be ready for the start of the season. Beason sustained the injuries during an organized team activity workout on Thursday. - - The Minnesota Vikings signed free agent wide receiver Josh Cooper and waived wide receiver Lestar Jean. Cooper was an undrafted rookie free agent of the Cleveland Browns in 2012 out of Oklahoma State. In two seasons with Cleveland, Cooper had 17 receptions for 166 yards in 11 games. - - The Pittsburgh Steelers signed third-round draft pick Dri Archer. Archer, a wide receiver/running back, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.16 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. It was the fastest time recorded at a combine. - - Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he expects backup quarterback Kyle Orton to attend next week's mandatory minicamp because he faces daily fines, which would total $69,455 for the three days. Orton, 31, skipped the voluntary offseason program, including the 10 days of OTAs while contemplating his future. He would have to repay the Cowboys $3 million of his $5 million signing bonus if he retires. He is scheduled to make $3.25 million this season. - - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed defensive end Ronald Talley. Talley was an undrafted rookie free agent of the Green Bay Packers in 2009. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2010. He had 14 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup in 15 games (one start) in three seasons with the Cardinals. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
