NFL-National Football League roundup

Feb 24 (The Sports Xchange) - San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York told the Sacramento Bee on Monday that the team had "no interest" in a deal to send coach Jim Harbaugh to the Cleveland Browns. A day after Browns owner Jimmy Haslam admitted the team contacted the 49ers about making a deal, York acknowledged there was a discussion but the deal was quickly turned down. "Not far at all," York said. "We had no interest in entering those discussions." NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk reported Friday that the two sides were close to a deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to the 49ers in exchange for Harbaugh, who rejected a move to Cleveland. York denied the report on Friday via Twitter. He told the Bee the teams were never as close to a deal as the reported indicated. York also said the 49ers want to secure a long-term deal with Harbaugh. - - - South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney put to rest any lingering doubts about his straight-line speed with a 4.47-second unofficial time in his first 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. When official times were released three hours later, the NFL recognized Clowney as the fastest defensive lineman at the event with a time of 4.53 seconds. - - - Missouri defensive end Michael Sam false-started off the blocks on his initial 40-yard dash attempt and posted an unofficial 4.79-second time in his next attempt. Sam wrapped up with a 4.84 on his second completed 40. The "official" time recognized by the NFL is 4.91. - - - When the Carolina Panthers exercised 2014 and '15 options on linebacker Thomas Davis' contract last week, they restructured his deal so it is more salary-cap friendly, the Charlotte Observer reported. The new deal created cap space by adding three voidable years onto the back end of the deal. The extra years spread out Davis' cap hit. The contract options gave Davis a $5 million bonus and reduced his salary for this year to the veteran's minimum of $950,000, cutting $3.25 million off his cap figure. - - - Former NFL linebacker Bart Scott is joining CBS' pregame show The NFL Today this season, the network announced. - - - The Chicago Bears re-signed safety Derrick Martin and center Taylor Boggs. Martin played seven games last season. He signed with the Bears after cornerback Charles Tillman's season-ending triceps injury. Martin mainly played on special teams. Boggs played just one game for the Bears last year. - - - The Oakland Raiders signed cornerback Taiwan Jones to a three-year contract extension, the team announced. The deal is worth $4.355 million, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The Raiders now have Jones under contract through the 2017 season. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
