NFL's 'Black Monday' has coaches on alert

The NFL regular season wrapped up on Sunday, offering a finalized look at the playoff picture and leaving some head coaches wondering if they’ll be coming back. Three teams, the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins, have already fired their head coaches and more are sure to follow. According to Mike Jones of USA TODAY Sports, these coaches could be getting the boot: Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys, Pat Shurmur of the New York Giants and Doug Marrone of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Northeast braces for snow and ice

A weather front that dumped rain in California and whiteout conditions in parts of the Midwest marches east on Monday. It will "re-energize" over the next few days in the northeastern United States with heavy rain for parts of the mid-Atlantic and snow and ice for parts of New England, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. That could cause problems for holiday travelers. Monday is likely to be "miserable" in New York and Philadelphia, with drenching rain, fog, high winds, flooding and a brisk wind, Sosnowski said. The steadiest snow will begin to taper off across the Plains on Monday but not before leaving double-digit snowfall totals in some areas.

Florida Gators and Virginia Cavaliers to face off in Orange Bowl

The Virginia Cavaliers are looking to upset the Florida Gators in the Orange Bowl on Monday night. It wasn’t a banner year in the Atlantic Coast Conference for any school not named Clemson, but the Cavaliers and do-everything QB Bryce Perkins will try to hang with a top-10 opponent. If the Gators take it, they could finish with 11 wins, which would be their highest total since 2012. For the Cavaliers, a win would be the biggest bowl victory in school history.

Starbucks, Burger King freebies are almost gone

To get one of Monday’s food freebies, luck may or may not be on your side. It’s the last day of Burger King’s Delay Your Way promotion and travelers with delayed flights get a consolation prize — a coupon for a free Impossible Whopper. (Here's how it works — you'll need the BK app.) And it's the next-to-last day of Starbucks' pop-up parties around the U.S. at 200 locations. Through the end of the year, Starbucks is serving free tall handcrafted espresso drinks at the events, held from 1 to 2 p.m. local time. (Here's how this promotion works — locations change each day.)

Flight attendant strike prompts more than 170 cancellations for Eurowings

Lufthansa’s low-cost carrier Eurowings has canceled more than 170 flights scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday due to a strike by flight attendants at its sister company Germanwings. The cancellations mostly affect flights within Germany from airports that include Cologne-Bonn, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart and Duesseldorf. Flight attendants’ union UFO called the strike over a labor dispute to work part-time at Germanwings, which provides around 30 of Eurowings 140 aircraft.
