NH election 2022: Joan Hamblet announces run for Portsmouth Ward 3 House seat

I am writing to announce my candidacy for my 2nd term as a New Hampshire state representative for Portsmouth Ward 3, which is now Rockingham County District 26.

In my first term I served on the House Election Law Committee. I would like to continue working to keep our elections fair and accessible and to continue pushing back on the myth that fraud is rampant in our election system. It’s been proven over and over that there is no widespread fraud in New Hampshire elections. As the many city and town clerks and volunteer poll workers know, there are multiple checks and balances in our voter registration process, voting process and reconciliation of the ballots after the polls close to ensure that only registered voters can vote, no one can vote twice, no one can tamper with your ballot, and every single vote counts. I will continue to oppose any bills that discourage voters from voting.

I also pledge to protect women’s reproductive rights. Women have needed abortions for many personal and health reasons since the beginning of humankind. Before safe medical abortions became available, women took care of other women, often in dangerous, unsanitary conditions and using primitive techniques, resulting in many women dying. We cannot go back to that. Whether you believe abortions are right or wrong, it is not your choice to make unless it is your body. We, as a society, have a duty to protect the health of women by ensuring abortions are safe and legal for anyone who needs one. Only a woman and her doctor can make that decision. The government has no right to interfere.

I feel strongly that public education is the foundation of our democracy. I opposed putting restrictions on the teaching of slavery and racism in our country’s history, and I opposed diverting taxpayers’ money to fund private schools. Our highest priority is to make sure our public schools are fully funded, so all children have the opportunity to receive a high quality education that will help them reach their full potential as adults.

I will support bills that expand renewable energy, affordable housing and reasonable gun safety laws. The job of a state representative is public service, and through that, human service. If re-elected I will continue to serve the residents of New Hampshire the best that I can for two more years. If you live in Ward 3, please re-elect me for state Representative on Tuesday, Nov. 8!
