NH troopers rescue injured hawk from side of busy road

Two New Hampshire troopers rescued a hawk who was unable to fly from the side of a road Saturday afternoon.

Sgt. John Bishop was on patrol in Laconia on Rollercoaster Road around 4 p.m. when he found a car parked to the side with its hazard lights on, according to New Hampshire State Police. The driver of that car told Sgt. Bishop he saw a small hawk lying on the right side of the highway, unable to walk or fly.

The hawk was alert and moving its head, but was in clear need of medical attention.

After positioning his cruiser to protect the injured bird, Sgt. Bishop called a wildlife rehabilitator in Henniker, who said she would take some time to get to his location.

In the meantime, the rehabilitator urged the trooper to wrap the hawk in a blanket and place him in a box.

Having neither of those items handy, officials say Sgt. Bishop made an emergency call to Trooper Thomas McSweeney, who quickly arrived on scene with both a box and a sheet to cover the hawk with.

After gently placing the injured bird in the box, Sgt. Bishop and Trooper McSweeney transported the hawk to Tilton where they met up with the wildlife rehabilitator.

The hawk was placed in the care of the rehabilitator.
