The first round of the 2022 NHL draft is scheduled for July 7.
The Arizona Coyotes currently hold the No. 3 overall pick in that draft, which will be held at Bell Centre in Montreal.
Who will the Coyotes select with that pick?
Take a look at the NHL draft projections for Arizona in recent 2022 NHL mock drafts.
Almost all of them have the Coyotes taking Logan Cooley, a center, with the No. 3 overall pick after Shane Wright and Juraj Slafkovsky get selected with the first two picks.
NHL.com: Coyotes select Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18 (National team development program)
Adam Kimelman writes: "Cooley (5-10, 174) is an elite skater with high-end offensive skills and a strong work ethic. He'll play at least one season at the University of Minnesota but is confident that's all he'll need before becoming an impact NHL player."
NHL.com: Coyotes pick Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18
Mike G. Morreale writes: "A scoring threat every time he steps on the ice, Cooley's top-end speed is off the charts and he has the ability to quickly process and execute on plays. He was second on the USA Hockey National Team Development Program with 75 points (27 goals, 48 assists) in 51 games. He also had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 23 shots on goal in six games to help the United States finish second at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship."
SB Nation: Coyotes take Juraj Slafkovsky, LW, TPS (FIN)
It writes: "The Kosice, SVK native, is a highly ranked player. The Athletic’s Corey Pronman had him at number 1 in his May 31st prospect ranking, noting, “Slafkovsky has all the assets you’re looking for in a top NHL forward. He’s a 6-foot-4 winger who can beat opponents with speed and skill. He possesses outstanding puck skills and can put pucks through legs and sticks at a very high rate.” Juraj Slafkovský already has the size and speed of an NHL player. He is listed as 6’4”, 218 pounds, and is already an established power forward. General Manager Bill Armstrong seems to prefer heavy players, and I’m sure head coach André Tourigny will love deploying Slafkovský after next season."
Odds Checker: Coyotes choose Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18
Matt MacKay writes: "Cooley has minimal flaws in his game, making him an easy pick to upgrade the depleted roster of the Arizona Coyotes. His lack of size is not an issue, and his speed, handles, and vision will earn Cooley massive minutes in the Desert."
My NHL Draft: Coyotes go with Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18
The site has Shane Wright going No. 1 overall to the Canadiens and Juraj Slafkovsky being picked No. 2 overall by the Devils.
Bleacher Report: Coyotes draft Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18
Lyle Richardson writes: "The Arizona Coyotes have been engaged in a major roster rebuild and could grab Logan Cooley of the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) to build depth among their prospect centers. Cooley sits second on Central Scouting's ranking of North American skaters. The 5'10”, 180-pounder finished second on the NTDP with 75 points in 51 games. He also had 10 points in six games for Team USA at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. Director of NHL Central Scouting Dan Marr believes the margin between Cooley and Shane Wright narrowed during the season, per Morreale. Though Wright got the nod as the top North American prospect, Marr praised Cooley's abilities. The Athletic's Pronman singled out his speed, skill and high hockey IQ. Cooley has committed to playing for the University of Minnesota next season. That will give him an opportunity to hone his skills at the NCAA level. He would be a terrific fit with the Coyotes' long-term plans. The young center could be ready to make the jump to the NHL within a couple of years."
Draft Utopia: Coyotes end up with Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18
Chris Ransom writes: "Arizona missed out on Shane Wright after missing out on Connor McDavid in 2015, the hometown Auston Matthews in 2016, and now Shane Wright in 2022. The Coyotes are now the front runner to land the highly touted Connor Bedard in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. My impression from Bill Armstrong's pre-draft press conference is that Shane Wright is first on the Coyotes big board with Logan Cooley second and Juraj Slafkovsky third. Whichever one of those three falls to this selection will be Arizona's pick here at 3. In this case, that selection is Logan Cooley. Armstrong also stated that the Coyotes have begun scouting for both the 2023 and 2024 NHL Entry Drafts."
