How NHSPCA is helping Clear The Shelters with a lifesaving pet airlift

STRATHAM — The New Hampshire SPCA was one of nine New England shelters that participated in a special Clear The Shelters lifesaving pet airlift mission.

The flight celebrates the return of the annual pet adoption and donation campaign, which began Tuesday, Aug.1. The New Hampshire SPCA received 21 cats and kittens from the lifesaving transport and is preparing them for adoption.

The Clear The Shelters airlift featured 250 cats and dogs from overpopulated shelters in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana, including harder-to-place or vulnerable pets, like dogs with asymptomatic heartworm, homeless cats and large dogs.

The pets were flown from Florida to New Jersey and New Hampshire and received by several shelters, which will provide any needed medical care and place the pets for adoption.

On Aug. 2, a chartered plane departed Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport at approximately 9 a.m. and arrived at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, where a portion of the pets were dropped off to participating shelters. The plane then traveled to Boston-Manchester Regional Airport in New Hampshire to deliver the remaining pets to the receiving shelters in New England.

“This flight, as well as Clear The Shelters is all about saving lives,” said Lisa Dennison, executive director of the NHSPCA. “There are overcrowded shelters all over this country. We are honored to be able to relieve some of that pressure while bringing wonderful animals to our community.”

The Clear The Shelters airlift is a part of Greater Good Charities’ “Good Flights” program and funded by Hill's Pet Nutrition and The Animal Rescue Site.

As part of NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters, NBC and Telemundo-owned and affiliated stations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico are partnering with animal shelters and rescue services in their communities to promote pet adoption and raise needed funds.

“We are grateful to Greater Good Charities, NBC & Telemundo, and all of the sponsors involved in the Clear The Shelters event," Dennison said. "We would like to invite the public to consider adopting a homeless pet this month.”
