Niagara Falls, Ontario drone test delayed due to police activity

Oct. 2—The test of drone technology in Niagara Falls, planned for this past Friday was called off due to police activity in the area.

A new date to test the drones will be announced once permits are confirmed, which could be this week.

The Canadian Company, North Star Drones is now expected to operate 300 drones at approximately 400 feet in the sky between the Skylon Tower and Clifton Hill. The test will feature drone lights forming shapes that represent a selection of the many world class attractions Niagara Falls has to offer visitors. The objective of the test is to understand sight lines in the area. It will have no audio component. The test show will last approximately 10 minutes, beginning at 9 p.m.

This past Friday, Niagara Regional Police Const. Barry Ravenek told the Niagara Falls, Ont., Review that at 6:55 p.m. officers responded to a disturbance call on Stanley Avenue. A man involved in the disturbance was located a short time later on Robinson Street, east of Fallsview Boulevard and was determined to be in crisis, he said.

Robinson Street was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. NRP crisis negotiators responded and spoke with the man who peacefully surrendered at 10:54 p.m., said Ravenek, adding the man was taken to hospital for medical treatment, but had no physical injuries.

North Star Drones said public safety is of paramount importance and takes priority in any situation.

The key elements that were able to be tested this past Friday — secure access of the site to ensure pedestrian safety, setup and readiness of the drones to fly and establishment of safe public viewing areas — all met or exceeded expectations.

Residents and visitors to Niagara Falls, Canada will be able to witness a re-scheduled presentation of drone technology on a date to be announced once permits are confirmed.

The upcoming test is part of a larger discussion about whether drone shows may represent a viable supplementary addition to fireworks at Niagara Falls while ensuring to preserve the natural environment. The test will assist in educating stakeholders with regards to show content, length, sight lines and other relevant information.
