Nickel Plate trailhead planned at Delaware Township office

A trailhead for the Nickel Plate Trail is being planned at the Delaware Township Government Center.

Fishers and the township have committed $500,000 to pave a path on 131st Street from Lantern Road to the trail. The Trustee’s office is just east of the Nickel Plate at 9090 E. 131st St.

The path will be the first step in adding a trailhead to the property, said Debbie Driskell, township trustee.

The site will likely include a bathroom, water fountains, benches and dedicated parking for trail users.

The cost of the project has not been determined.

The government center already includes a community center, which is rented for wedding receptions, banquets and corporate events.

The Nickel Plate runs from 146th Street to 106th Street in Fishers, with ongoing construction to extend it to 96th Street.

At 146th Street the trail will run in Noblesville to Pleasant Street, a span of about 2 ½ miles. That portion of the trail is under construction.

Indianapolis plans to extend the Nickel Plate south to the Indiana State Fairgrounds at 42nd Street.
