Night closures on Route 146 on Sept. 25 to 27 as state demolishes two bridges in Lincoln

LINCOLN — Starting on Sunday, Sept. 25, drivers on Route 146 can expect overnight traffic issues and rolling roadblocks as the state demolishes two bridges in Lincoln.

The bridges on Twin River Road and Breakneck Hill Road, both of which are adjacent to the Lincoln Woods State Park, will be demolished, which will cause intermittent closures on Route 146, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.

"Slow moving night-time travel is anticipated during this operation," spokesman Charles St. Martin wrote in a news release.

The bridges are being demolished and replaced in two stages to reduce the impact on traffic, he wrote.

Two other bridges in North Providence are being rehabilitated as part of the project, for a total cost of $35.7 million. The project should be completed by the fall of 2024, St. Martin said.

Pedestrian access on the two bridges being torn down will be maintained throughout the project.

The bridge demolition could also result in temporary ramp closures, with detours to Route 246, which runs parallel to Route 146.

Traffic headed north on Route 146 will also be impacted by the lane split on Interstate 95 North. Route 146 starts as an off-ramp from Interstate 95.

Until Sept. 30, the far left lane of Route 95 North, through downtown Providence, has been split from the remaining two lanes as crews work on a new bridge.

That lane split has the far left lane bypass the exits for Route 146 and the state offices and merging traffic from Route 10 and Atwells Avenue.

Further north on Route 146, the state plans to build a new overpass in North Smithfield at Sayles Hill Road, which will eliminate the traffic light at that intersection. Route 146 is also being repaved.
