Night of the Gladiators coming to Valdosta's Mathis City Auditorium

Aug. 19—VALDOSTA — The Georgia National Physique Committee will present Night of the Gladiators Aug. 27 at Mathis City Auditorium in Valdosta.

Sponsored by Valdosta Health and Wellness, Night of the Gladiators is an open competition for men and women, ranging in age from teens to those over 70. Promoters are Jim and Maria Wells of Chula, and Tricia Novakoski of Panama City, Fla.

Women will compete in figure, physique, bikini, wellness and bodybuilding divisions. For men, the divisions are physique, classic physique and bodybuilding. Promoter Jim Wells said they are expecting 60-100 athletes at the event. He said it is the only NPC event in South Georgia.

Pre-judging will begin at 9 a.m. Finals start at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 to the opening session and $40 to the finals, $50 for VIP tickets.

In addition to the competition, many guest posers will be in attendance from the International Federation of Bodybuilding. These athletes include Iris Davis, Abdul Gibbs, Chris McMullen and Christina Bryant. Davis, at the age of 78, is one of the oldest women active in competitive bodybuilding.

While watching the competitions requires a ticket, there will be a free portion of the event. More than 30 vendors are expected for a fitness and business expo at Mathis City Auditorium, with products and demonstrations. Many will offer free samples, according to the press release.
