Night Hawks complete their annual Women's Clinic

Jun. 26—THOMASVILLE- On Friday, June 23, the Thomas University football staff conducted their 1st Annual Women's Football Clinic. Held at the TU Athletic Complex, the clinic saw approximately 25 participants.

After the participants registered for the clinic, they were given a pre-camp meal as they greeted each other. Participants were allowed to try on football shoulder pads and helmets. This allowed each of the ladies to gain knowledge of the day-to-day process of the locker room experience.

From there, the ladies were taken to the weight room, where they learned about the football preseason training and conditioning programs. Participants were showed some basic workout routines that the football players go through to build muscle mass and prevent injuries.

Head Coach Orlando Mitjans then took everyone into the football team meeting room, where he talked about football operations, student-athlete expectations, and introduced the football staff.

Offensive Coordinator Buzz Preston discussed various offensive information, such as formations, positions, personnel groupings, and play calling. Quarterbacks coach, Shawn Jones, wide receivers coach Keith Harris, and offensive line coach, Patrick Tresey added offensive information based on their positions coached.

Defensive Coordinator Andy Wolfrum discussed what occurs in a defensive unit meeting, including a practice plan, film review and classroom expectations for the student-athletes. The defensive staff of Wolfrum, outside linebacker coach Sidney Starr, defensive line coach Chris Seay, and linebacker coach Will Christopher showed the ladies the difference in a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 defense. They also added the difference between a cover-one, cover-two, and cover-three defensive backfield.

Allison Posey, of WTXL-TV 27, Tallahassee, Fla. and Morgan Jackson, WALB-TV 10, Albany, Ga. spoke briefly about how their television stations cover football.

The next set of camps for the summer will be held at Thomasville High School's Memorial Stadium. The first will be on Friday, July 14 and will be a prospect camp. This camp will be open to all rising 9th — 12 graders and those with current or post-military service. This camp will be an opportunity for potential future Night hawks to get on the radar of the coaching staff. The camp will feature individual skill work on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The camp will run from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. and cost $50 per participant.

The third and final camp of the summer will be the following day, Saturday, July 15 at Memorial Stadium. This youth camp will be open to rising 1st — 5th graders and focus on basic football fundamentals for youth. The camp will run from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. and cost $50 per participant.
