Nikki Haley has scheduled a Sunday night campaign stop in Rock Hill in her attempt to overcome former President Donald Trump’s lead a week before South Carolina’s GOP presidential primary.

Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, is set to speak at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Room at 4017 Laurel Creek Drive, according to her campaign staff and candidate website. Rep. Ralph Norman, the Republican congressman from Rock Hill who’s become a prominent Haley campaign surrogate, will introduce her, his office confirmed to The Herald.

The event is open to the public. For event information, visit the Haley campaign website.

It is Haley’s first campaign stop in Rock Hill and fast-growing York County during the primary season after two previous events nearby in Indian Land close to Fort Mill and Charlotte. With Norman’s introduction, she’s getting a welcome from the only member of the South Carolina congressional delegation to endorse her, while Trump has garnered public official endorsements throughout South Carolina.

The Magnolia Room location is where Norman regularly holds his York County campaign and election events.

Trump leads Haley in polls

Haley’s campaign is looking to boost support among South Carolina voters as the state inches closer to its GOP presidential primary on Feb. 24. Early voting already started and continues through Feb. 22.

Haley, a 52-year-old Bamberg native, lags far behind Trump in polls, including a poll from Winthrop University released Tuesday.

The Winthrop poll has Trump leading Haley 65% to 29% among likely Republican primary voters. A CBS News poll released Monday has Trump up by 35 points with a 65% to 30% lead.

The Real Clear Politics average of polls gives Trump a 34-point advantage over Haley. The website FiveThirtyEight gives Trump a similar 66% to 30% advantage over Haley in South Carolina.

In recent campaign events and advertising, the campaign has turned vitriolic between the two. Haley has attacked Trump for his comments about her husband, who is serving overseas in the military.

Trump has so far not firmly set any events for York, Chester, or Lancaster counties. Trump has a scheduled event for Feb. 23 in Columbia, The State reported.
