Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Dragged Gwendolyn Christie For This Dead-On 'GOT' Prediction Years Ago

Warning: This article is dark and full of Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers.

There had been whispers for a while that Bran Stark would play a major role in how Game of Thrones ended. But as the final season went on, and Bran continued to do almost nothing with his powers as the Three-Eyed Raven, the theory seemed less likely. So it was a big shock in last night’s finale when Tyrion, seemingly out of nowhere, determined that Bran was the best choice for the Iron Throne — and was met with unanimous support from the swiftly-assembled council. A big shock, that is, to everyone who isn’t Gwendoline Christie, who accurately predicted Bran’s place on the throne two years ago.

In an Extra interview from 2017, Christie and fellow GoT star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau speculated on who would win the game of thrones, long before the season 8 script had even been written. Coster-Waldau played it safe: Daenerys Targaryen or “that guy” (he gestures at a poster of the Night King). Christie looks thoughtful, then jumps in: “Don’t you think it’s going to be someone out of left field? Don’t you feel that those seem like the obvious choice?” she asks. “And what we know about the show is that it constantly surprises you, so,” she pauses, then concludes decisively: “I’m wondering if it might be Bran.”

Coster-Waldau looks decidedly unconvinced by this pronouncement, half-squinting with barely concealed skepticism. Christie powers on: “We keep seeing the world from his perspective. We keep seeing the visions,” she says, before Coster-Waldau interrupts. “The Three-Eyed Raven as the king? No, it doesn’t make sense.”

We’re not saying we agree with Coster-Waldau, but his reasoning is interesting: “He’s already planning the future, he’s seeing into the future and the past, so…I don’t know,” the actor shrugs. “But how do you know we’re currently in the present in the story?” Christie presses. “I don’t,” Coster-Waldau admits. The two go back and forth a bit longer about the rules of the GoT universe, both demonstrating an impressive understanding of Bran’s fictional capabilities and the shifting storylines they create.

The takeaway from all this? Well, Christie has a seriously tight grip on the story logic of GoT, and honestly we kind of wish she’d been in the writer’s room for season 8. Even though her prediction ends up being correct, we have a feeling her version of how Bran ends up on the throne would be a little more exciting.
