Niles Canyon Road to remain closed at least until Friday

(KRON) — A section of Niles Canyon Road will remain closed at least until Friday, Feb. 23 following a slipout earlier this week, according to Caltrans. Highway 84 between Old Canyon Road and Main Street in Sunol has been closed in both directions since Monday.

Ground underneath the roadway gave way following heavy rains, causing a section of the highway to collapse early Monday morning. With another impactful weather system already on the way, state officials plan to keep the roadway closed.

“To ensure the safety of motorists, State Route 84 will be closed until Friday, Feb. 23, because another storm system is set to impact the region and could bring flooding concerns,” Caltrans said.

Crews will assess the roadway Friday to determine if it can be safely reopened to one-way traffic control.

In the meantime, alternate routes into Fremont are advised:

  • I-680 to N. Mission Boulevard

  • I-580 to 238/880
