Nintendo mines Minecraft for latest fighters added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate video game

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues building a bigger roster. The newest additions: characters from Minecraft.

Steve and Alex, the default characters in the popular building simulation game, will soon be available for the Nintendo Switch fighting game.

The characters are among the six included in the game's second downloadable Fighters Pass Vol. 2 ($29.99; or individual challenger packs priced at $5.99). Already, players can add Min Min from the game Arms; four others remain unannounced.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai noted, in a video Nintendo posted Thursday, that the blocky characters provided some challenges in balancing the game for their battle techniques against other characters. They will be "really unusual," he said. "A lot of elements are completely different from our previous fighters."

Players will also be able to play as a zombie or enderman from Minecraft. This downloadable content pack also includes a new stage and seven music tracks from the Minecraft series.

The mashup brings together the characters from Minecraft, which is one of the best-selling video games of all time having sold more than 200 million copies, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one of the most popular Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo says it has sold about 20 million copies of the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans can learn more about the new characters and when they will be available in a more in-depth video on Nintendo's YouTube channel on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. PT.
