Nissan becomes first Asian automaker to support Tesla’s charging connector for NA market

On Wednesday, Nissan became the first Asian automaker to incorporate Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port into its electric vehicles (EVs).
Key details: Announced in a press release on Wednesday, Nissan, which established itself as a pioneer in the EV revolution with the release of its Nissan Leaf in 2010, revealed that it would be adopting Tesla’s NACS port for its future lineup starting in 2025.
With the recent news, the company effectively became the first automaker in Asia to add the charger to its EVs, joining Ford, GM, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.
Support for current models: Besides adding NACS ports to its upcoming EVs, Nissan also shared its plan to roll out CCS-to-NACS adapters for its Ariya model, which will become available in 2024.

Long-term plan: The latest announcement is part of Nissan’s long-term Ambition 2030 vision, which aims to make 40% of its electrified vehicle sales in the U.S. fully electric by 2030.
“We are happy to provide access to thousands more fast chargers for Nissan EV drivers, adding confidence and convenience when planning long-distance journeys,” Nissan Americas chairperson Jérémie Papin wrote in a statement.
The road ahead: Nissan also revealed its plan to produce two new EV models with NACS ports at its plant in Canton, Mississippi, with production estimated to begin in late 2025.

Other details: Developed by Tesla for its Model S sedan in 2012, the NACS port was made available to network charging operators and vehicle manufacturers in November 2022.
