Nissan North America is voluntarily recalling more than 1.2 million Nissan and Infiniti vehicles because the backup camera may not display an image when the vehicle is placed in Reverse, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Nissan estimates that 100 percent of the vehicles being recalled have this problem.

The Federal Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance notified Nissan in December 2018 about a failure of the system during a lab test of a 2019 Nissan Altima.

We reached out to Nissan for a comment on whether there have been any accidents or injuries associated with this problem, but the automaker did not immediately respond.

The problem: The backup camera settings can be adjusted so that the rearview image is no longer visible, but the system will keep that setting and not display any image the next time the vehicle is placed in Reverse.

The fix: Infiniti and Nissan dealers will update the software for the backup camera settings, at no charge to owners. Nissan expects to notify owners of the Altima and Rogue the week of Oct. 21, 2019. Owners of all other Nissan and Infiniti vehicles will be notified the week of Nov. 4, 2019.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can call Infiniti customer service at 800-662-6200 or Nissan customer service at 800-867-7669. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S29.
