NJ sports round-up: Colo-NESCO softball team tops Baxter in regional opener

The Colo-NESCO softball team is playing its best ball at the perfect time after winning its final two regular season games and topping Baxter in the opening round of Class 1A regionals.

The Royals downed Janesville by a 7-2 score June 27 and BCLUW by a 12-2 margin June 29 at Stan Vigness Field in McCallsburg to close out the regular season. They then downed Baxter by a 7-6 margin Friday in Baxter to improve to 8-20 on the season.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team saw its season come to a close with a 5-3 loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the opening round of 1A district play Saturday at Reinbeck. The Royals finished with a 13-12 record.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team fell to Janesville by a 10-1 score June 27 and defeated Colfax-Mingo by a 10-3 score at Colfax June 28 in its final two games of the regular season.

The Nevada softball team ended its regular season with losses at Saydel (12-0), Greene County (13-3) and Gilbert (9-2). The Cubs finished 3-11 in the Heart of Iowa Conference and they fell to 7-18 overall.

The Nevada baseball team dropped a 13-11 slugfest at Webster City June 28 and an 11-3 decision to Humboldt June 30 in Nevada and the Cubs pounded Greene County by a 10-0 score June 29 at Jefferson. Nevada finished 6-8 in the HOIC and fell to 13-15 overall.

Royal softball team holds off Bolts

The Colo-NESCO softball team took a 3-1 lead after one inning and did just enough to hold on versus Baxter.

Abigail Hostetler was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Callie Kohlwes 2-for-5 with a double, run and RBI and Rylee Upchurch 2-for-2 with a run for Colo-NESCO. Molly Angell tripled and scored and Jenna Hill was 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece.

Kohlwes was the winning pitcher. She gave up one earned run on five hits with nine strikeouts.

In the victory over Janesville Taylor Cox went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI, Izabell Voelker finished 2-for-3 and Kohlwes was 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Upchurch went 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece, Rebekah Nessa went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Angell singled and scored and Rylie Handsaker added a single.

Kohlwes allowed two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts as the winning pitcher against Janesville.

Kohlwes also got the win against BCLUW after throwing a two-hitter with two strikeouts in five innings. She also went 2-for-4 with two runs and RBIs at the plate.

Angell and Upchurch both had two hits, two runs and an RBI against the Comets. Rebekah Nessa was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Hill and Katherine Rouse 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Handsaker 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Hostetler 1-for-3 with a run.

C-N baseball team struggles offensively in district loss

The Colo-NESCO baseball team had trouble putting hits together in its district loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

The Royals only had three hits off Rebel pitchers William Kiburis and Nick Tscherter. Kenny Cutler hit a two-run double in the second inning, Kaleb Gray went 1-for-3 and drove in a run in the seventh and Ephram Muntz singled and scored.

Drew Banks took the loss after giving up three earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

Colo-NESCO opened its final week with the loss to Janesville. Spencer Hansen was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Andrew Grover walked and scored and Breckin Clatt chipped in a single against the Wildcats.

Ben Rouse took the loss against Janesville after allowing three earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

A seven-run fourth inning lifted Colo-NESCO past Colfax-Mingo. Banks got the win after giving up two unearned runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Cutler went 3-for-3 with a run and Rouse 3-for-4 with two runs in the victory.  Gray doubled and drove in a run, Grover went 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece, Muntz finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Banks singled and scored.

Cub softball team has tough final week

The Nevada softball team couldn't get much going during its final week of the regular season.

A Mayzi Weig single accounted for Nevada's only hit in the loss to No. 7 (3A) Saydel. Samantha Herridge took the loss after giving up 12 unearned runs on just three hits with one strikeout.

In the loss to Greene County Makayla Spaid went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Peyton Hanson doubled and drove in a run, Weig singled and scored and Hanson also had a base hit. Spaid gave up four earned runs on six hits with one strikeout in four innings.

Lani Khounsourath tripled, scored and drove in a run during the loss to Gilbert. Kylie Taylor singled and scored and Weig, Hanson and Maria Rivera each singled.

Herridge took the loss against Gilbert after allowing two earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout in six innings.

Cub baseball team gets decisive win over Rams

The Nevada baseball team picked up 12 hits and received a brilliant pitching performance from Karter Beving in its victory over Greene County.

Beving threw a no-hitter against the Rams. He struck out nine batters and walked three.

Beving also singled and drove in three runs at the plate. Gavin Melohn doubled twice and scored two runs, Colin Memmer went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, William Carsrud was 2-for-3 with a run and Anthony Eaton went 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.

Christian Hawbaker doubled, scored and drove in a run and Connor Schnettgoecke was 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece.

In the loss to Webster City Beving was 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI and Melohn tripled, scored twice and knocked in three runs. Schnettgoecke also drove in three runs, Memmer picked up two RBIs and Cael Franzen and Ty Dittmer both singled and scored.

James Edwards took the loss against the Lynx. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Melohn went 3-for-3 with two triples and one steal, run and RBI apiece in the loss to Humboldt. Schnettgoecke singled and drove in a run, Franzen and Caleb Kooiker both scored once and Memmer, Edwards and Carsrud each had a single.

Franzen was the losing pitcher against Humboldt. He surrendered two earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts in five innings.
