NJ sports round-up: Five Cubs named all-state in soccer

The Nevada girls soccer team had four all-state selections and the Cub boys had one player chosen in Class 1A.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team won four of five games in a busy week. The Royals defeated BCLUW (20-12) June 14 at Zearing, Dunkerton (3-2) June 15 at Dunkerton, Melcher-Dallas (19-4) Saturday on the road and Clarksville (15-5) Monday at home.

Colo-NESCO also suffered an 11-1 loss at the hands of South Hamilton June 17 in Jewell. The win over Clarksville put the Royals at 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Nevada baseball team scored victories over Carroll (11-10) Friday and West Central Valley (17-2) Saturday. The Cubs fell to Ballard (11-1) June 14, Hampton-Dumont (10-7) June 16 and West Marshall (14-0) Monday in going to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Colo-NESCO softball team pounded out a 16-4 victory over Dunkerton June 15. The Royals were also swept by Baxter June 13 (15-6 and 19-18) and lost to Montezuma (14-0 June 14), Iowa Valley (16-4) June 16 and Madrid (13-4 Friday) in going to 3-16 overall and 2-7 in the ISC South.

Nevada softball team suffered losses to Prairie City-Monroe (11-8 June 13), Roland-Story (13-3 June 15) and Boone (7-6 June 16). The Cubs also fell to Carroll (8-3 Friday) and Solon (8-3) and Adel-Desoto-Minburn (7-0) Saturday at the Kiwanis Invitational in Roland.

The Cub softball team concluded the week with a 5-14 overall record and 2-9 HOIC mark.

Emma Strottman, Drew Robinson highlight Nevada all-state soccer selections

Emma Strottman led a group of four girls named to the 1A all-state team in girls soccer for Nevada.

Strottman helped Nevada go 13-7 and once again reach the 1A semifinals at the state soccer tournament before bowing out to Davenport Assumption. Strottman anchored an elite Cub defense that posted 12 shutouts and she also had one assist on the season.

Cub senior forward Mayzi Weig, senior midfielder Tessa Borwick and senior keeper Maddie Dunham made the 1A second team. Weig scored 22 goals and dished out three assists, Borwick tallied 17 goals and four assists and Dunham made 90 saves and only gave up 13 goals.

Drew Robinson was the all-state selection in 1A for the Nevada boys soccer team.

Robinson scored a school-record 35 goals in helping the Cub boys go 15-7 and reach the 1A state quarterfinals. He also dished out 14 assists.

Colo-NESCO baseball team leads the ISC South

The Colo-NESCO baseball team took a 1.5-game lead in the ISC South after last week's competition.

Spencer Hansen drove in three runs and Kenny Cutler, Lucas Frohwein, Ben Rouse and Drew Banks all knocked in two during the victory over BCLUW. Cutler was 3-for-5 with a double and four runs, Rouse also doubled and Breckin Clatt doubled and scored twice.

Frohwein got the win after giving up one run on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings.

Banks fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks in the victory over Dunkerton. Clatt singled and scored, Cutler singled and drove in a run, Andrew Grover doubled and Frohwein and Kaleb Gray each picked up one hit against the Raiders.

Colo-NESCO had 15 hits in the victory over Melcher-Dallas. Hansen went 4-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs, Grover and Rouse both drove in two runs, Ephram Muntz was 2-for-3 with two runs and Cutler and Clatt both scored three times.

Rouse picked up the win against Melcher-Dallas after throwing three scoreless and hitless innings with two strikeouts and one walk.

An eight-run fourth inning propelled Colo-NESCO past Clarksville. Clatt was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Banks 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Gray also singled and knocked in a pair of runs. Cutler, Grover and Frohwein all singled, scored twice and drove in a run.

Banks picked up the win against Clarksville after surrendering one run on two hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

In the loss to South Hamilton Muntz singled and scored off an RBI from Grover and Cutler and Clatt each picked up one hit. Frohwein was the losing pitcher after giving up seven earned runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

Gavin Melohn, James Edwards spark big wins for Nevada baseball

Gavin Melohn went 3-for-4 with two runs, four steals and three RBIs for Nevada in its victory over Carroll.

Cael Franzen was 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs and one RBI, Karter Beving drove in two runs and Christian Hawbaker was 2-for-2 with two runs against the Tigers. Beving was the winning pitcher after giving up four earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in five innings.

Beving went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs in the victory over West Central Valley. James Edwards also drove in four runs, Ty Dittmer was 1-for-2 with three runs and RBIs apiece, Caleb Kooiker doubled and knocked in two runs and Connor Schnettgoecke finished 2-for-2 with two runs.

Edwards got the win against West Central Valley. He gave up two unearned runs in five innings of no-hit ball with four strikeouts and one walk.

William Carsrud took the loss against Ballard. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and seven walks in four innings.

Melohn hit a solo home run to account for Nevada's only run versus the Bombers. Beving, Carsrud and Edwards each singled once in the loss.

A four-run sixth inning wasn't enough for Nevada to make a comeback against Hampton-Dumont-CAL.

Carsrud went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Edwards doubled and drove in a run, Dittmer was 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece and Schnettgoecke and Franzen each knocked in one run.

Colin Memmer was the losing pitcher after surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings.

Nevada only mustered two hits in its loss to West Marshall.

Melohn and Beving each singled once. Carsrud was the losing pitcher after allowing eight earned runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

Royal softball team hits its stride versus Dunkerton

It all came together for the Colo-NESCO softball team against Dunkerton June 15 at Dunkerton.

The Royals collected six hits and took advantage of 12 Dunkerton walks plus Raider defensive mistakes to cruise to the lopsided victory. Callie Kohlwes was the winning pitcher after giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.

Kohlwes also doubled and picked up two runs and RBIs apiece on offense. Molly Angell was 2-for-4 with two runs and RBIs apiece, Abigail Hostetler was 1-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, Taylor Cox and Rebekah Nessa both singled and scored and Rylee Upchurch picked up two runs and RBIs apiece.

Colo-NESCO pounded out 20 hits in the 19-18 loss to Baxter.

Kohlwes, Hostetler, Angell, Nessa and Riley Handsaker each had three hits in a losing effort. Kohlwes scored twice and drove in one run, Hostetler picked up two runs and RBIs apiece, Angell tripled and drove in two runs, Nessa doubled and picked up five RBIs and Handsaker scored three times.

Izabell Voelker was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Upchurch doubled and picked up two runs and RBIs apiece. Kohlwes was the losing pitcher after allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

In the 15-6 loss to the Bolts Voelker doubled, scored and drove in a run and Hostetler, Cox, Upchurch and Jenna Hill each picked up an RBI. Hostetler and Cox also scored a run, Upchurch was 2-for-3 with a run and Hill picked up a single.

Annabelle Nessa was the losing pitcher. She gave up 10 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Colo-NESCO had five hits in the loss to Montezuma. Angell collected two and Voelker, Handsaker and Cox one apiece.

In the loss to Iowa Valley Cox and both doubled and drove in a run and Kohlwes was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece. Angell and Hill both singled and scored and Upchurch also picked up a hit.

In the loss to Madrid Kohlwes went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Handsaker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Katherine Rouse was 2-for-3. Angell finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, Rebekah Nessa singled and Hill scored once and drove in a run.

Kohlwes took the loss against the Tigers after giving up 11 earned runs on 11 hits and four walks. She recorded an impressive 14 strikeouts in a losing effort.

Cub softball team struggles with consistency

The Nevada softball team never could put it all together last week. The Cubs saw their losing streak extend to 12 games as they had a tough time keeping opposing teams off the board and stringing out hits on offense.

In the loss to PCM Peyton Hanson was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Samantha Herridge went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Lani Khonsourath was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI, Briar Crain drove in two runs, Weig went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Avery Hinson and Paige Handsaker both singled and scored.

Herridge took the loss after giving up 11 runs on three walks with two strikeouts.

In the loss to Roland-Story Herridge hit another solo homer, Hinson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hanson drove in a run. Crain and Kylie Taylor both singled and scored once and Makayla Spaid gave up six unearned runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings on the mound.

Nevada couldn't maintain an early 5-3 lead in the loss to Boone.

Herridge went 3-for-4 with two doubles and RBIs apiece and Weig finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs. Spaid was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Khounsourath 2-for-4 with a double.

Herridge gave up four earned runs on eight hits with six walks and two strikeouts in five innings as the losing pitcher against the Toreadors.

Crain, Herridge and Hanson each had two hits in the loss to Carroll. Crain also scored twice, Herrige picked up one run and RBI apiece and Hanson drove in two runs.

Spaid was the losing pitcher against Carroll after allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Herridge kept up her hot play at the plate during the Kiwanis Invitational Saturday by going 2-for-2 with a double, home run and three RBIs in the loss to Solon. Khonsourath was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Crain singled and scored once against the Spartans.

Herridge allowed eight runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks as the losing pitcher.

Nevada gave an ADM team ranked No. 1 in 4A all it could handle in its other Kiwanis game. Statistics for the game were not available at press deadline.
