NJ sports round-up: Nevada softball powers past Grand View Christian

The Nevada softball team snapped a 12-game losing streak with a dominant 15-6 win over South Hamilton June 22 at Jewell.

The Cubs fell to West Marshall by a 7-3 score June 20 at State Center before knocking off the Hawks to push their Heart of Iowa Conference record to 3-9. They were dealt a 13-3 loss by Newton June 23, but came back with a 7-3 victory over Grand View Christian Friday at home in improving to 7-15 overall.

The Nevada baseball team picked up victories over South Tama (7-6) and South Hamilton (9-0) before falling to Grinnell by a 10-2 score June 23 and then dropping both games of a doubleheader to Saydel Monday (13-4 and 16-0). The two losses to Saydel put the Cub baseball team at 12-13 overall and 5-8 in the HOIC.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team went 1-2 during the week to put its record at 12-10 overall and 7-5 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Royals suffered a 12-2 loss at Don Bosco June 22, pulled off a 7-3 victory over Grand View Christian at home June 23 then lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at North Tama Friday.

The Royal softball team suffered an 18-0 loss to Clarksville June 20. The Royals pulled off a 2-1 victory over H-L-V June 21, lost to Don Bosco by a 9-2 margin June 22, hammered North Tama by a 14-1 score Friday and suffered losses to AGWSR (8-1) and Roland-Story (15-2) at the Norsemen Classic in Roland Saturday.

The Colo-NESCO softball team saw its record go to 5-20 overall and 4-9 in the ISC South.

Home runs spark two Cub softball wins

Nevada turned to the long ball in its victories over South Hamilton and Grand View Christian.

In the win over South Hamilton Samantha Herridge and Peyton Hanson both homered. Herridge added a double and ended up 3-for-5 with six RBIs and Hanson went 3-for-4 with five RBIs.

Lani Khounsourath finished 3-for-4 with three runs, a steal and an RBI and Kylie Taylor went 1-for-3 with three runs, two steals and an RBI against the Hawks. Makayla Spaid was the winning pitcher after giving up five earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.

Herridge and Khounsourath both went deep in the victory over GVC. Herridge hit a solo bomb in the fifth inning and Khounsourath smacked a two-run dinger in the sixth.

Khounsourath also drove in three runs with the aid of a GVC error in the fourth inning. Hanson picked up an RBI and also doubled once.

Spaid was the winning pitcher after allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five batters in 5 2/3 innings.

In the loss to West Marshall Herridge doubled twice, Spaid doubled and drove in a run, Taylor doubled and scored and Avery Hinson picked up an RBI single for the Cubs. Herridge took the loss after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece.

In the setback against Newton Herridge hit a solo home run, Taylor singled and scored and Khounsourath also scored once. Herridge suffered the loss after surrendering seven earned runs with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Cub baseball team gets win at Principal Park

The Nevada baseball team's close victory over South Tama came at Principal Park in Des Moines June 21.

The Cubs broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the sixth then held on against the Trojans. Colin Memmer was 2-for-3 with two runs and steals apiece, Gavin Melohn picked up two RBIs, a steal and a run and James Edwards was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece in the victory.

Ty Dittmer and Karter Beving were both 1-for-3 with an RBI, Christian Hawbaker walked, stole two bases and sored, William Carsrud picked up two hits and Cael Franzen added two steals.  Franzen was the winning pitcher after allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk going all seven innings.

In the win over South Hamilton Beving tossed a three-hit masterpiece with 14 strikeouts and three walks. Franzen was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Dittmer 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Anthony Eaton 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cubs offensively.

Connor Schnettgoecke went 2-for-4 with a double and Hawbaker doubled, scored and drove in a run against the Hawks.

Nevada fell behind 5-0 after one inning and couldn't dig itself out of the hole against Grinnell. Hawbaker singled and scored both Cub runs, Eaton and Edwards both drove in a run and Schnettgoecke finished 2-for-3.

Colton Leslie took the loss against Grinnell after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

In the 13-4 loss to Saydel Franzen went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Beving was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Hawbaker doubled and drove in a run, Melohn doubled and scored and Schnettgoecke walked and scored. Jackson Burlage took the loss after giving up four earned runs on two hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

Nevada only had three hits in the 16-0 loss to the Eagles. Melohn, Franzen and Eaton each singled once.

Franzen took the loss on the hill after giving up three earned runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Royal baseball team gets past Thunder

The Colo-NESCO baseball team saw Spencer Hansen belt the first home run of his career and Ben Rouse throw seven quality innings during its victory over GVC.

Hansen went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs and Rouse allowed two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in earning the complete-game victory. Kenny Cutler was 3-for-4 with a double, steal and two runs, Andrew Grover singled and scored, Lucas Frohwein tripled and scored and Drew Banks went 2-for-3.

In the loss to Don Bosco Cutler singled and scored, Banks was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Banks walked and scored.

Colo-NESCO let one get away against North Tama. The Royals took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to give up three runs to end up on the short end of the stick.

Cutler was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Banks doubled and scored three times, Grover doubled and drove in two runs, Ephram Muntz was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Breckin Clatt singled and scored against the Redhawks. Hansen took the loss in relief after allowing three earned runs on one hit with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Royal softball team pounds Redhawks

The Colo-NESCO softball team got its bats going in the victory over North Tama. The Royals scored nine times in the fourth inning to put the game away early.

Taylor Cox was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, Abigail Hostetler doubled and drove in three runs, Molly Angell tripled and scored three times, Rylee Upchurch doubled and scored twice and Callie Kohlwes went 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece. Izabell Voelker was 1-for-2 with two runs, Rebekah Nessa finished 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Jenna Hill scored and drove in a run.

Kohlwes got the win after firing a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk.

The Royals rallied with two runs in the seventh inning in their victory over H-L-V. Kohlwes tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the winning pitcher and Angell and Hill both singled and drove in a run.

A Hill single accounted for Colo-NESCO's only hit in the loss to Clarksville. Kohlwes took the loss after allowing 11 earned runs on 15 hits in three innings.

Annabelle Nessa was the losing pitcher against Don Bosco. She surrendered seven earned runs on 14 hits with three strikeouts.

Upchurch and Voelker both singled and scored against the Dons.

In the loss to AGWSR at Roland Hostetler finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run, Hill picked up an RBI and Kohlwes and Upchurch both singled. Kohlwes took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in four innings.

Colo-NESCO had four hits in the loss to Roland-Story. Voelker and Hill both singled and scored, Handsaker doubled and drove in a run, Angell singled and Kohlwes picked up an RBI.

Annabelle Nesa took the loss against the Norse. She gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings.
