NJSIAA grants waiver for qualification to its team wrestling tournament

The NJSIAA says it's waived the 10-match requirement for qualification to the team wrestling tournament.

"As a result of numerous COVID-related disruptions this season, the NJSIAA will waive the minimum 10-match requirement against NJSIAA member schools for the 2021-2022 Boys Team Wrestling Tournament,'' NJSIAA Executive Director Colleen Maguire said in a statement Sunday.

The waiver applies to teams who have fewer than 10 matches. Among them are Phillipsburg, Kingsway, Bergen Catholic and St. Joseph (Montvale).

The cutoff date for the tournament was originally Saturday. The NJSIAA extended it to Sunday due to the snow storm that hit the state. It is believed no team scheduled a match on Sunday.

The top eight teams in the final power point ratings in each of the public schools qualify for the tournament. The nonpublic sections will be seeded by a committee of six public school administrators. The tournament will be seeded Tuesday at NJSIAA headquarters, Robbinsville.

"The power point rankings will be based on the average of these matches but will not exceed 10,'' Maguire said. "For those schools with more than 10 matches, the 10 best match results will be used.

The tournament begins Feb. 7 with the public sectional quarterfinal and semifinals and nonpublic quarterfinals. The public school sectional finals and nonpublic sectional semifinals are Feb. 9. The public school state semifinals and nonpublic sectional finals are Feb. 11. The seven group championship matches are Feb. 13 at Franklin High School.
