NKY recycling plant facing charges, new Anderson brewery, here are today's top stories | Daily Briefing

Greetings! Jeanne Houck here, a breaking news reporter at The Enquirer.

Newport city officials and residents have complained for years about fires and explosions at River Metals Recycling on Licking Pike. They had hoped to get a measure of justice at a trial that was set to begin Friday in Campbell County District Court. Instead, the case has been delayed again until next month.

The business, which makes steel from scrap metal – but not many friends among its neighbors – faces misdemeanor charges of violating Newport's noise ordinance.

Representatives of the recycling plant and its owners have not responded to my requests for comment. But as a journalist of more than 40 years, I know where else to look for information. I’ve filed public records requests with federal and Kentucky environmental agencies about the findings of any inspections conducted at River Metals.

The delayed trial will now begin Aug. 14. In the meantime, click here for a trial preview packed with facts, including whether explosions are increasing at the plant and what happened to a sound barrier wall the company built there.
