NL wins eighth straight; Monroeville falls at Huron;

Jan. 24—MANSFIELD — The New London girls basketball team won its eighth straight game with Monday's 62-38 non-league rout over host Temple Christian.

For New London (14-5), Madison and Emilee Rowland each scored 17 points, while Olivia Yetter added 11 and Gracie Thomas had eight points.

The Wildcats led by nine points at halftime, then outscored the Crusaders (7-6) by a 32-17 margin in the second half to pull away.

At 10-1 in the Firelands Conference, the 'Cats remain one game behind Western Reserve (13-3, 11-0) for first place in the league. New London visits Crestview (8-10, 7-4) on Saturday, and with a win, assures itself a first-place rematch at Western on Feb. 4.

HURON — The Monroeville girls basketball team fell to 4-13 overall on the season following Tuesday's 59-20 non-league loss to host Huron.

Julia White scored 11 points for the Eagles, who trailed the host Tigers (12-6) by a 25-8 margin after one quarter and 42-13 at halftime.

Things will not get any easier for Monroeville (3-8 Firelands Conference), which travels to Western Reserve (13-3, 11-0) on Saturday.

JUNIOR HIGH

St. Paul wrestlers sixth

MANSFIELD — The St. Paul junior high wrestling team placed sixth out of 17 teams on Jan. 21 at the Mansfield Middle School Invitational.

The Flyers had two individual champions, a second-place finisher, and two wrestlers who took home third place.

In the 128-pound weight class, Zeke Dvorak wrestled his way to a 4-0 record. Dvorak won three matches by decision with scores of 7-0, 4-2, and 12-5 — and added one pin in 55 seconds to take home first.

At 160, Rafael Gross pinned his way to the title in times of 2:09, 2:08, 1:08 and 35 seconds.

Vince Caizzo finished in second at 98 pounds. He was 2-1 for the day, winning his first two matches with pins in four minutes and 2:09 before he fell in the finals.

Levi Rospert (116) and Adam Dowdell (122) each placed third for the Flyers.

Rospert won his first two matches with a pin at 1:02 and a 3-0 decision. Rospert fell in his third match, dropping down to the consolations where he won his final two matches by decisions of 6-2 and 5-0 ending his day with a 4-1 record.

Dowdell fell in his opening match, but fought back to end the day 4-1. He won by decision 9-6 and pins at :55 and 2:58. In his final match, Dowdell won by major decision 13-0 for third.

Other wrestlers scoring for the Flyers included River Couch (1-2) at 142 and Landon Kennebeck (2-2) at 150. Camden Coetzee (172) went 2-2 and Wyatt Houser (86) was 1-2.

Also wrestling for the Flyers was Blake McDonald at 134.
