NM lawmakers shifting to in-person attendance

May 3—SANTA FE — New Mexico lawmakers plan to return to in-person meetings this summer.
They are between legislative sessions now, but interim committees — some featuring the highest-ranking members of the Legislature — are meeting to hear reports, review spending and prepare legislation for next year.
House Speaker Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, said he expects the committees to meet largely online through May and June, then shift to in-person meetings in July, with masks and other safe practices required.
Starting July 1, lawmakers won't draw their daily pay for meeting attendance unless they appear in person.
The Legislature has handled most committee work through webconferencing programs over the last year to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The Capitol itself reopened to the public last week, when the Legislative Finance Committee held an in-person meeting.
Video of legislative meetings will still be streamed online.
